On the occasion of celebrating its 75th anniversary, the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations (WFUWO) is organizing the 23rd Literary Contest named after Marusia Bek on the theme “United by Love for Ukraine – for its victory and restoration” for young Ukrainian women in the diaspora and in Ukraine.
The event’s partner is the International Institute of Education, Culture, and Diaspora Relations at Lviv Polytechnic National University. The sponsor is the Ukrainian Women’s Association of America.
The contest is named after Marusia Bek (1908-2005), a successful American of Ukrainian descent, a lawyer, a doctor of law, a journalist, a state and political figure in the USA, an active public figure in the Ukrainian diaspora, a patron, the first woman in the Detroit City Council, and in the position of the Mayor of Detroit. Due to her tireless efforts to draw international attention to the situation of Ukrainians forced to live under the conditions of the totalitarian communist regime in the Soviet Union, Marusia Bek was rightfully called a “freedom fighter.”
