UNWLA is pleased to announce a $1,500 stipend opportunity for scholars presenting research on Ukrainian-related topics at the 2026 ASEEES Annual Convention, taking place November 12–15, 2026, in Chicago, Illinois.

As part of its longstanding commitment to advancing Ukrainian scholarship, education, and cultural awareness, UNWLA will select one recipient from among all eligible applicants to receive the $1,500 stipend to support their participation in this year’s convention, with particular consideration given to early-career researchers and those with limited institutional funding.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be confirmed speakers at the 2026 ASEEES Convention, presenting an individual paper or participating in a panel or roundtable.
  • Present research that focuses substantially on a Ukrainian-related topic.
  • Be based in the United States or affiliated with a U.S. institution.
  • Be willing to acknowledge UNWLA’s support in their presentation materials and/or professional biographies.
  • Be willing to participate in post-convention follow-up activities, such as providing a brief written summary, contributing an article, or participating in a webinar for UNWLA audiences.

Preference will be given to early-career scholars and applicants with limited institutional support. Additional consideration may be given to presentations examining Ukraine’s experiences of empire and imperialism, sovereignty and statehood, national identity, democracy, and the historical or contemporary marginalization of Ukrainian voices and narratives.

“Ukrainian voices and perspectives deserve to be heard and recognized in academic conversations around the world. At UNWLA, we believe in supporting scholars who bring Ukraine’s history, culture, and contemporary experiences to the forefront of these discussions. The 2026 convention theme, ‘States and Empires,’ makes this work especially meaningful. Through this initiative, we hope to help scholars share their research, reach wider audiences, and contribute to a deeper understanding of Ukraine and its place in the world,”

Anna Petelina, UNWLA National Education Chair.
