On July 2, 2025, the horrific news broke that the Department of Defense had halted military aid to Ukraine, aid which had already been appropriated by Congress, promised to Ukraine in the name of the American people, and much of which was already on its way to Ukraine. It is the responsibility of Congress to stand up for our system of checks and balances, in accordance with its Constitutional Article I powers, to demand that the president adhere to the commitments made by the United States and legislation enacted by Congress.
Unilaterally and abruptly ending military aid to Ukraine will not only have a devastating impact on Ukraine, but it erodes the reputation of the United States and destroys the faith that our allies have had in the United States for over 80 years. It empowers and serves only the interests of our adversaries: while the United States cuts off aid to Ukraine, North Korea is sending 30,000 soldiers to help Russia fight on Ukrainian soil.
This disastrous decision will cost Ukrainian lives and will serve to undermine any peace negotiations. This is not peace through strength. It does not make America great again. Rather, it only makes the United States look weak and untrustworthy. The American people deserve better. The Ukrainian people deserve better.
The Ukrainian National Women’s League of America (UNWLA) calls on the administration to immediately resume all halted aid to Ukraine. We implore Congress to act publicly and decisively to support Ukraine and demand the resumption of appropriated and promised aid to Ukraine.
