«ЖІНОЧИЙ СВІТ» Wilma Sokolowa LOVE Translated by М. 5. ‘ the heart of Nature, with a pil- saturated with low of mos: drops of dew — tucked under her head, with a smile оп.Пег lips, and а tear glistening on her eyelash, slumbered Love. Awakening, she opened her eyes and in that instant the grayness of dawn vanished and day began. The birds responded with thousands апд thousands of songs. Every flower exuded fragrance. The sun sent forth bright rays of flaming light. The slumbering stars found repose in the deep eyes of Love. She was as beautiful as the morn. The reflection of her bright and radiant soul shone on her forehead; а joyous and affectionate smile lingered on her lips and her eyes sparkled as the water of deep wells in the forest. She breathed with longing and with her soft warm arms she de- sired to embrace the entire world. She felt immensely wealthy. She knew she had gifts to donate to the human race, gifts which meant more than strength, more than fame She was and more than richness. able to endow the human race with the greatest and noblest feeling, un- equaled by anything else in the uni- verse; she could endow the human race with herself. And she wanted to be generous, for she was Love. She arose from her mossy bed and set forth journey human hearts, in which she desired to live and rule. In her wake the birds sang harmonious and de- lightful tunes, the leaves rustled mysteriously and every drop of dew flamed with longing ; the air wafted fragrance and at her every step the 8 ona flowers blossomed. She went on until she came to a lowly wooden hut. There lived a man with his young wife. “Will you permit me to make my abode near you?” she asked. “With pleasure!” they both rer plied. She stayed. She was happ: ite ing in those two, simple and hearts. Every morning the man ee arly for the distant forest to hew trees, He returned late at night. But even though it was a long and difficult day, Love cheerad him with memories of his dear mate. He knew that he was struggling not only for himself, but also for her, Thus his work seemed light, and he handled the ax like a feather, whistling merrily аз he worked. ‘The wife remained at home dur- ing the day, all alone. She washed, cleaned, and performed other household tasks. She weeded the garden in front of the hut and til- led the unfertile soil. At times sad- ness envelopedher, but Love sooth- ed her heart, enlivened her thoughts and wrought song upon song on her lips. Enlightened, the wife sang alternately with the lark, who high above her flitted about in the azure sky. “What do Love, at one time. “I really don't know!” said the wife, frankly. “I lack nothing. I have a husband who loves me and two healthy hands with which to aid him in his work. What more do you desire?” asked smiled and placed a child in the arms of the woman. And the woman perceived ineffable joy in her heart. But the eyes of Love began to fill with tears. She knew what misfortune lay in the near future for this young and happy mother, She knew that very soon unmerciful death would claim her husband at his work and that the infant would be the mother’s sole happiness. So she crept closer to the heart of the woman and as the blooming flower issues a breath of perfume, so spoke she: “May the love for that child bring you joy and happiness! May it fortify you with the strength ne- cessary tomake sacrifice upon sacri- fice eagerly, during your entire life, until you rear that small son into a healthy and honest man! For you shall be called upon to give endlessly — sleepless nights by the bedside of an ailing child, the sweat of your brow hand, a thousand fears that will furrow your forehead with wrinkl- es, worries that will weave untime- ly gray threads into your hair, and drop upon drop of your blood — Day after day, year after year, you shall give ceasel and endles- sly unto death... Yet little will you receive in return... Your sacrifices will be your sole and greatest re- They will be the refreshing drops that will slake the thirst of your maternal heart, eternally lov- in; Then Love laid her hand of blessing on the heart of the woman submerged in her immediate hap- piness and set forth to continue her journey. ——_ Ин
