20 «ЖІНОЧИЙ СВІТ» Section by Young Ukrainians AN OVERBURDENED DURING the past year the Ukrainian youth of America has displayed some feverish activity in the field of organization work. New clubs have sprung up here and there, old ones have been re- habilitated while others have been aroused from a state of lethargy and enlivened by the more active meinbers. The English sections sponsored by the Ukrainian newspapers are filled with reports and news items concerning these clubs. But as we peruse the newspaper reports very carefully we find that almost the entire program of these clubs is crammed with social functions. There is one continuous round of informal dances, formal dances, tea-parties, card parties, get-together socials and business meetings combined with more tea and entertainment. And so our young folks dash off from one affair to another, filling their evenings with fun and merriment. Yet when we inquire of some of the members of the club as to. the purpose of their organ- ization, we are almost sure to hear that they are young Ukrainians who have united with the intention of studying Ukrainian problems in order to become real Ukrainian patriots eventually Such an aim is certainly praiseworthy but how our youth intends to attain that aim through the medium of social activities is beyond our comprehen- sion. Of course, we are not shocked at the fact that 5 to participate in social activities. We even must admit that very often, in the SOCIAL CALENDAR most secret recess of our heart, we have envied some of our comely Ukrainian maidens because of their social grace and charm which no doubt must be the result of much time, effort and energy spent in the consci- entious attendance upon social duties. Furthermore, it is a universally admitted fact that all people, young or old, need some recreation and diversion from their daily tasks. This applies especially to the youth who is endowed with so much vitality and energy that it must be spent in some form or other. But we fear that the Ukrainian youth will utilize all of its vitality, strength and spare time in indulging in too much recreation. And with these mounting ap- prehensions in view, we are raising this hue and cry with the hope that our youth will be persuaded to save some of that energy and apply it to more serious and worthy tasks. Let the youth dance and be merry! But let it also find time to read, write and learn something about the affairs of Ukraine! Let it acquire the habit of devoting oneself to the more serious problems confronting all mankind and particularly our own op- pressed people! For the years pass by swiftly and the time spent in endless play brings no lasting benefit but weariness, boredom and disgust with lif So come on, Ukrainian youth ! Cancel some of the engagements from your club’s social calendar and make place for a few lectures, debates, literary discus- sions, ete, and give yourself the opportunity to be come serious, intelligent and real Ukrainian patriots ! wm MY LAST WILL Taras Shevchenko WHEN I DIE, then bury Me upon a mound, Mid spacious Steppes, in Ukraina, Beloved soil around. That yonder fields, widely stretching, I may be adoring; Mighty Dnieper with his windings, I may hear him roaring! When he bears from Ukraina Into the blue sea Blood of foemen, then the meadows And hills dear to me — Will I leave all, hasten soaring. Even to God Pll go, There to pray, but until then God I do not know. Bury me, and then arise, Your fetters tear asunder, Sprinkling with foemen’s vicious blood Your freedom safe thus render. And in the ccming kinship great, Kinship new and free, Forget not to gently, kindly, Sometimes speak of me. Translated by John Yatchew
