«ЖІНОЧИЙ СВІТ» IMMEDIATE DENTURES---PLATES Dr. Р. Kanchier ‘The patient who anticipates dental treatment should be mind- ful of these things. A healthy and і "у dental service The science of dentistry has contributed much to the health of humanity by its extensive re- search work and it is a never tir- ing effort to devise simplified and sure methods of. prevention in or- der that you may preserve your teeth and health for a maximum duration of time. Dentistry’s greatest problem, however, is replacing teeth that have served their usefulness and have to be extracted. Contrary to what the average layman thinks a replacement does not соп- sist of merely “fitting” the mouth with a crown, a bridge, a partial or full set of dentures. Were that the ease, the practise of den- tistry would be extremely simple, but I fear it would contribute lit- tle to the health and happiness of posterity. А partial denture for example might fit, that is, it might stay in the mouth and really look beauti- ful, yet, at the same time it could be destroying the remaining teeth, or it might not be allowing you to perform that very important function of chewing and masticat- ing food, which of course, would not 'be contributing mueh to your health. Patients frequently present themselves to be fitted with a set of dentures much the same as they would go to the shoe store to he fitted with a pair of shoes. What a delusion those people la- bor under; of course, dentures must fit your mouth, but fitting the dentures is very secondary in importance. Of what value would they be if the dentures fit but contributed nothing to the main- tainenee of your health? Dentures made only to fit are quite apt to be breaking down the tissue that supports them. A sore mouth frequently results. Your dentures become loose and there is a marked inability to chew and mastieate. If I were merely to fit the mouths of my patients, I greatly fear my conscience would suffer as a result of being an unserupul- ous practitioner. What dentistry actually fits with full dentures is not your mouth, but the functional mechan- ism that exists th Everybo- dy works and moves their jaws differently. No two people have the same condition. If we did not make dentures to conform to the condition presented by each and every patient it would be much the same as a clothing store where everyone was sold a size 36 suit of clothes regardless of the size they needed. Та early dentis patients were subjected to a great deal of discomfiture before they learned how to wear and use a set of den- tures. They had to stick to it before they could actually chew and masticate their food. That was when dentures were only made to fit the mouth. The pro- eience has greatly over old uncertainties. Now, the patient that has dif- ficulty in using, or discomfiture in wearing a new set of dentures is the exception, whereas it used to be the rule. Modern dentistry realized that an appliance of any nature placed in your mouth has a mission to perform, that is, perhaps vastly more important than merely to look well. The fact that the appliance must funetion and con- tribute its share to the maintain- anee of your health is mount to all else. para- will result. Dentistry of today is a far ery from its antiquated methods of a few years back. The evolution of the horse and buggy to the pre- sent day automobile has been no more rapid than the march of dental science; the crude denture, the bridge, ete., of a few years ago, is today, when properly made, an extremely scientific piece of work and a very impor- tant health factor. The advance in dental surgery has been no less rapid. The extraction of teeth has been reduced to a painless and scientific procedure. The mere pulling of teeth has gone with other antiquated and less modern methods. Today we re- ze the importance of extract- ing teeth in a manner that will not harm the remaining tissue in the mouth. 8 аї By по means the least in im- portance in a modern dental practice and one which will be interesting to everyone, is what we in the dental profession call immediate insertion. By that I mean making you a partial or a full set of dentures before your teeth are extracted, and im- mediately placing the new appli- ance in the mouth at the moment of extraction which means, of course, that you have not been without teeth at all. Many people have tolerated an unhealthy mouth condition too long, avoiding the necessary ex- tractions because the nature of their business perhaps would not allow them to be without teeth. Or maybe it is just pride that makes us abhor the thought of being seen without teeth. What ever the reason may be it is no longer necesssary to be without teeth even for a minute.
