28 «ЖІНОЧИЙ СВІТ» THE UKRAINIAN YOUTH EXPRESSES ITSELF! WHILE sojourning in the city of С. I had the opportunity, at опе time, to come into contact with a group of Ukrainian boys and girls, ranging in ages from 14 to 18 years, who had assembled for a certain purpose. Prompted by a desirg to know their attitude towards Ukraine and Ukrainians, I took the liberty of distributing among them a hastily prepared questionnaire, Five of the twenty questionnaires answered are listed below for your indulgent perusal. Note the answers, young readers, and compare them with your own ideas. Do they coincide, or do they conflict? Perhaps you would care to express. your own opinion on this subject and communicate them to the Ukrainian youth in general, through the medium of this “Section by Young Ukrainians” in Zinochy Svit? We defy you to do so! Will you accept our challenge? Mary V. Beck. Questions 1. Are you proud to admit that you are of Ukrainian descent? State the reason for your answer. 2, Why is Ukraine in the subju- gation of other countries? 3. What have you done to make Ukraine known to your fellow A- mericans ? 4. What can the Ukrainian Youth in America do for Ukraine? 5. Is it necessary or advisable for the Ukrainian Youth in merica to organize? Answers (as submitted) 1. If every Ukrainian knew the history of Ukraine, I doubt if there would be one who wouldn’t swell with pride every time he heard the name of Ukraine. Ukraine has the most colorful history of any nation in Europe, in fact, of almost any nation in the world. Our ancient princes, our republic under the head of Bohdan Chmelnitsky and the Cossacks, and the struggle of our heroic soldiers in recent years, are enough to convince any- one of our glorious past. 9. Ukrainians are in the subju- gation of other countries because their land is very rich іп fertile soil, and therefore desirable. It is also full of natural resources. For a long time Russia wished to pos- sess the “Bread Basket of Europe.” 3. For the purpose of making Ukraine known to mericans, I wrote themes on Ukraine for my English teachers at school; I ex- plained my nationality to people who had never known that such а country exists; І gave intelligent information regarding Ukraine when asked questions by curious or interested individuals. 4. The Ukrainian Youth can do a great service to Ukraine by becom- ing good American citizens and establishing themselves in the high esteem of Americans, and then spreading Ukrainian propaganda. 5. The Ukrainian Youth ought to organize, not only in the event of war, but also to study about the country of their parents and to know the real reasons for the subjugation of their fatherland. 1. Lam proud to admit that I am an Ukrainian, becausa my great grandfathers and grandfathers, on both sides, were Zaporoghian Cos- Because of that descent and the training I received by my parents, I, too, consider myself a proud Cossack. 2. I think the Ukrainians are in the subjugation of other countries because thay do not have a strong sacks, and capable leader who would organize them and strike the ene- mies where it hurts the most. 3. At every opportunity I have made known to others that Iam an Ukrainian Cossack and have even shown them, to the best of my ability, feats of Cossack horse- manship, which I have been trained in. I also take care to mention our past and glorious history. 4. The Ukrainian Youth can prove to everyone concerned that they are descendants of a healthy and hardy race by cultivating the sports of their forefathers. 5. It is very necessary for the Ukrainian Youth to organize, for together only, can they keep the flame of patriotism burning in their souls. They should also learn to know each other, so that when they become of age, they can choose their mates from their own nation- ality and not intermarry with persons of other nationalities. во 1. I take it as a matter of fact that I am Ukrainian. I don’t think there is very much to be proud of in the Ukrainian history. It is so discouraging to have people say that they have never heard of Ukraine. There is a little to be proud of, however, as far as our music, dances and costumes are concerned. 2. The Ukrainian people are not free, for when they do get liberty, they fight about who should be the ruler. This has weakened the faith of the people in the govern- ment. Bickering among the dif- ferent denominations has also caused the downfall of Ukrainians. 3. To the best of my ability, I have always informed others as to the whereabouts of Ukraine and
