ХХ Х II Конвенція СУА 85 MARIANNA ZAJAC UNWLA PRESIDENT As I write this, my final report as UNWLA President, I am filled with gratitude for all the good work that we, S oyuz i anky , have accomplished together throughout my tenure. On the pages of our XXXII Convention Book, readers will find the detailed reports of UNWLA National Board members, as well as reports from the chairs of our Standing Committees, from the presidents of our Regional Councils and reports from the backbone of our organization, our branches. These reports reflect the dedication of our leadersh ip, the commitment of our members to provide humanitarian aid in America, in Ukraine, as well as in many locations around the world . These reports reflect our efforts to cultivate the spiritual and intellectual growth of our fellow Ukrainians through support of scholarships, educational programs, and informational outreach, as well as to support our decades - long mission to sustain and promote our Ukrainian heritage. I tha nk each member of the National Board for her contribution to our numerous successes. As with any national organization, UNWLA c an be successful only through the efforts of individual members . Guided by the leadership and contributions of our National Board members , this tandem has allowed UNWLA to function efficiently and to implement our projects effectively . The four years since the 2017 UNWLA C onvention have been filled with constructive and positive activity. Even the unexpected COVID restrictions of 2020 that changed and limited our in - person interactions did not really stop us. I am proud of how UNWLA adapted . We learned to navigate various methods of electronic communicati on , and continued resolutely with our projects, not the least of which was a very successful virtual celebration of our 95 th anniversary in December 2020. The motto of the 2017 UNWLA XXXI Convention - Our Membership, Our Strength – continues to be the corn erstone of our organization. The motto chosen for the virtual 2021 XXXII Convention – Let Us Spread Our Wings – focuses on the future, and confirms that during good times , as well as times of challenge, UNWLA will find new and innovative ways to be the mos t effective Ukrainian women’s organization in the United States. One of our obligations is to understand that the life of our organization, similar to the life of each individual, is determined by the progression of time and change. Therefore, we must “sp read our wings” as our membership changes . As an organization that has evolved through several waves of immigrations from Ukraine, we continue to welcome the newest immigration of women, to absorb their experience, and to listen to their ideas. Precisely b ecause UNWLA encompasses diverse groups of members, throughout my tenure we have made a concerted effort to bring together these groups for open conversation and collaboration so that the future of UNWLA will be based on mutual respect and cooperation. We “spread our wings” as we develop new approaches to fulfilling our organizational obligations , such as virtual roundtables and this virtual convention, electronic convention registrations, an electronic version of this convention book. To many of our membe rs, this facet of innovation present s challenges, but the circumstances of our time now require a major adjustment. New projects also helped us “spread our wings” and expand our horizons , for example, making the bold decision to refresh the design of Our Life magazine and reorient the focus of the magazine’s content ;, supporting the innovative development of the UNWLA A rtist’s D irectory, and endorsing the expansion of the Women’s Studies Ce nter at Ukrainian Catholic University. The warm greetings we received from our spiritual and community leaders reflect the respect UNWLA has earned during our 95 - year history. We have much about which to be proud as we move ever closer to our centennial ce lebration in 2025. As the pandemic subsides and our members can meet safely, let us acknowledge that we have confirmed once again that UNWLA members are resilient, strong, generous, charitable, hardworking – and that we will continue to “spread our wings” until we reach 100 and then beyond !
