ХХ Х II Конвенція СУА 49 Dear Soyuzianky, Delegates, Participants, and Guests of the XXXII UNWLA Convention ! I am happy to be here with all of you even though our gathering this year is far different from the ones to which we have become accustomed during the long history of our beloved organization. Yet even the difficulties resulting from COVID - 19 could not stop UNWLA’s membership from celebrating UNWLA’s 95 th anniversary. This is a testament to the strength and resilience of our members and our leadership. This strength and resilience is not a new phenomenon within the UNWLA. Resilienc e was a characteristic that resonated among those Ukrainian women who preceded us, the pioneers who founded our organization, who “kept Ukraine alive” in the new and free world to which they came to live. Theirs was no easy task, and today we cannot easily comprehend the hardships these women encountered or understand the strength that enabled them to overcome them. They accepted these challenges and created an organization that served as a bridge between the old world they left and the new world where they were building new lives. Let us remember and honor our predecessors, for they are the beginning of the UNWLA’s long and interesting history. We must also remember the history of Ukraine and how this geographically distant homeland has shaped and influence d who we are and what we do. In 1991, after decades of subjugation by the Soviet Union, Ukraine proclaimed independence. Yet this proclamation did not set Ukraine free; many hurdles had to be overcome to achieve the true freedom for which Ukrainians yearne d. Within this context, we must remember and honor the Heavenly Hundred – the heroes who lost their lives at Kyiv’s Maidan; we must also remember the illegal occupation of Crimea by Russia, as well as those who lost their lives protecting the borders of th eir homeland in the regions of eastern Ukraine. God bless them all! And may God continue to bless the UNWLA, the women who created our organization and those who have sustained this organization through the decades. This includes all the women assembled he re today — all the delegates from branches and Regional Councils, Members - at - Large and members of the UNWLA National Board. Thank you for your dedication and for your hard work. Congratulations! In closing, I extend my best wishes to outgoing President Mari anna Zajac and the members of the UNWLA National Board who served with her. I also offer heartfelt congratulations to the newly elected National Board. Stay well and may the Blessed Virgin always have you under Her care. БЕРЕЖІМОСЬ! Anna Krawczuk UNWLA Honorary President
