232 ХХ Х II Конвенція СУА UNWLA BRANCH 85, PATRONESS KATRUSIA ZARYCKY, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS CHICAGO REGIONAL COUNCIL March 7, 2020, at the film screening of Baba Babee Skazala, from left: Renya Stasula, Natalka Mycyk, Roxana C harkewycz, Katia Hrynewycz (President) Ariadna Sumyk - Whelan (Co - President), Ulana LaMothe On March 7, 2020, we hosted the award - winning documentary Baba Babee Skazala - When Home Is What You Carry In Your Heart at the Ukrainian National Museum. With 135 guests in attendance, we began our evening with the film screening followed by a panel discussion with Oresta Fedyniak, Luba Kolomayets, Mykola Mischenko, and Halia Sarancha. We were all moved by stories of their most personal and harrowing experiences. Our guests, panelists, and branch members remained for the wine and cheese reception. Little did we know that this would be our last public event before pandemic restriction began in mid - March 2020. Spearheaded by our Social Welfare Chair Ulana Markiv, and with donations obtained by our members, we sent goodwill packages to orphanages in Chernivtsi and the Caritas Center in Kyiv. We continue our efforts in supporting the orphaned children in Ukraine. Branch 85 devotes much time and effort in support of the UNWLA Scholarship Program. In 2020, we created a scholarship fund in the name of the late Joseph Mycyk for university students studying architecture. Joe, as we knew him, was the spouse of our Scholarship Committee Chair, Natalka Mycyk, and was a longtime supporter of our branch's c haritable work. For more than 20 years, Branch 85 has participated in the annual Christmas Around the World event at Chicago’s prestigious Museum of Science and Industry. Due to pandemic restrictions, this year the event was not open to the public . Determined to continue our tradition, we donned our vyshyvanka and masks and decorated a tree with hundreds of handcrafted, Ukrainian - themed ornaments. We were delighted that ours was one of the trees highlighted in the Christmas Around the World virtual tour offered on the MSI website. Branch 85 members always actively and enthusiastically supported UNWLA Chicago area activities, events organized by other branches, and local Ukrainian community events. As we continue to live in these unprecedented times, our UNWLA members strive to adjust to our new, post - COVID world and build community virtually. The officers and members of Branch 85 extend our best wishes for a successful XXXII UNWLA Convention!
