The UNWLA Detroit Regional Council, Plast, our churches, and the entire Ukrainian - American community all responded to helping meet Branch 81 humanitarian aid g oals by contributing advice, staging areas, coordination, materials to sell, or contributed money. President Maria Holian’s husband, Stefan Holian obtained photographs of wounded soldiers, displayed at various events, moving many hearts to contribute gen erously. After seeing the downloaded photos of rehabilitated soldiers, people often did not buy anything, simply contributed money outright, so that the branch was able to collect $3,089.25 ($1,000 of which went to purchase computers for the hospital). Fun ds collected were sent via MoneyGram to Dr. Khomyk, who would purchase catheters, and other supplies, delivering items to the hospital. Lesia Kalandyak now travels throughout Ukraine, training people in physical therapy, encouraging the development of this area of rehabilitation practice and study. In the tradition of UNWLA, one good deed generated another and now volunteers from Ukrainian Women’s Union (Союз Українок) have continued the work initiated by Branch 81. In turn, our branch would like to continu e such work and we are searching for institutions that can benefit from our small efforts and result in a multiplying effect.
