ХХ Х II Конвенція СУА 9 UKRAINIAN NATIONAL WOMEN’S LEAGUE OF AMERICA 1925 - 2020: WOMEN’S COMMUNITY, CITIZENSHIP, AND COMMITMENT IN THE UKRAINIAN DIASPORA Martha Kichorowska Kebalo In 2020, the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America celebrated the 95th anniversary of our remarkable organization. Since our founding in New York City in 1925, Ukrainian National Women’s League of America (UNWLA), or Союз Українок Америки (СУА), has been at the heart of Ukrainian American community life. For close to a century, UNWLA has anticipated the needs of our ethnic community, propagated Ukrainian culture, and engaged in public diplomacy on behalf of the homeland. As we, S oyuz i anky , face the future, we have every reason to be proud of the legacy of which we will continue to be stewards. A prominent element of that legacy is The Ukrainian Museum (established by UNWLA in 1976 and incorporated in 1977), a major cultural institution th at graces the historic Little Ukraine neighborhood of Manhattan and is the crown jewel of the community. However, the real story of the UNWLA is the less tangible legacy of decades of volunteer service for the community in the United States, as well as ca re for the well - being of women and their families in Ukraine. The forthcoming book - length account of our history, UNWLA 1925 - 2020: Women’s Community, Citizenship, and Commitment in the Ukrainian Diaspora , appearing now in English, with the expectation of a Ukrainian language translation, reminds us of the organization’s beginning and evolution, against a backdrop of national and global events. ( New York City) One of UNWLA’s first projects was a cultural exhibit shown at the Astor Hotel in 1926. Here, in 1931, members of UNWLA’s Branch 1 hosted an exhibit of Ukrainian traditional handiwork at the Grand Central Palace Hotel. The UNWLA Builds Community The UNWLA was inspired by the women’s organization that flourished in western Ukraine in the 1920 - 30s, Союз Українок, from which the UNWLA adopted its name. The initial goal of the UNWLA was to unite all Ukrainian women’s groups in the United States under one umbrella for a non - partisan front to help a homeland in the center of Eastern Europe that was struggling for independence, as well as to coordinate efforts to provide long - distance humanitarian aid. While originally focused on alleviating the struggles in Ukraine, the efforts of the women of the UNWLA were no less essential to the
