98 ХХХІ Конвенція СУА I answer questions from concerned members whose branch may be failing owing to declining membership, either because of an aging population or because of the members’ lack of motivation. We work together with our Regional Council presidents to help these branches find solutions so that they can continue to stay active. When necessary, I assist in the smooth dissolution of a branch whose members feel they are no longer able to maintain activities because of age or health issues. It is my hope that those who still can will find a way to join another branch in their region or transition to becoming a Member at Large. Each individual case is handled with deep respect and courtesy. We are faced with many challeng- es. Our aging members and competition from newly emerging organizations seem to be the greatest diffi- culties when it comes to sustaining and growing members. We also have many opportunities. The newest Ukrainian immigrant women are now joining. We need to continue to evolve as an organization, changing for the better. Back home in Arizona, I had the distinct pleasure of welcoming Senator John McCain to a Town Hall meeting in January 2016 in our parish, St. Mary the Protectress Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Phoenix. Senator McCain is a steadfast supporter of Ukraine. Children greeted him with traditional bread and salt. After his talk and question-and-answer period, I presented him with a Bulava . I spoke of the name Kozak being derived from the Turkish word kazak , meaning free man, and how the Ukrainian Kozaks rode the steppes and settled at the Zaporizhian Sich to freely defend Ukrainian territory from the Turks, Tatars, and Poles and from the encroachment of Russian Imperialism. Some would even consider them mavericks. One of the weapons they used was the Bulava . Later it became a symbol of authority, as Kozak officers would bestow the Bulava on their elected Hetman or Otaman. Since Senator McCain is considered a maverick, it was our hope that he would put it to good use, not necessarily as a weapon but as a reminder of Ukraine’s struggle against its enemies. Jokingly, I also said that he could even swing it around the Senate as a symbol of authority. Each Executive Board Member is assigned to a Regional Council/BAL Liaison, to improve un- derstanding and communication between them. Since I belong to a Branch at Large in the southwest, it was logical for me to be assigned to BAL. With the collaboration of Branches at Large Co-Liaisons Orysia Zinycz and Olya Czerkas, to- gether we rewrote the Job Description / Eligibility Requirements for the position of Co-Liaison in 2016. I have the great pleasure of acknowledging the members whose hard work in recruitment brought together women to form new branches: Oksana Dats , former Member at Large on the Executive Board, successfully started Branch 137 in New Jersey. She has moved on to other endeavors, and we wish her all the best. Her wonderful positive attitude and perseverance, along with her cheerful personality, will never be forgotten. She also created the first YouTube video as a membership tool for women to understand what the UNWLA is all about. The Ohio Region elected a new president, Dozia Krislaty . To her credit, she and her members worked hard to keep their Svitlychka alive. She also established a new branch this year, Branch 138. Ulana Zinycz was recently elected president of the New England Regional Council and also was success- ful in establishing our newest branch this year, Branch 139. We now have 70 branches in 8 Regional Councils , two groups of Branches at Large , and one group of Members at Large . The Detroit Regional Council was established in 1935. The regional president is Vera Andrush- kiw. There are 11 branches: 26, 45, 50, 53, 58, 76, 81, 96, 115, 129, 132. The Philadelphia Regional Council was established in 1938. The regional president is Halyna Henhalo. There are 9 branches: 10, 13, 43, 54, 67, 88, 90, 91, 128. The New York Regional Council was established in 1940. The regional president is Halyna Romanyshyn. There are 6 branches: 21, 30, 64, 83, 113, 125. The Ohio Regional Council was established in 1959. The regional president is Dozia Krislaty. There are 4 branches: 8, 12, 130, and 138, the latter newly established in January 2017. The New Jersey Regional Council was established in 1959. The regional president is Ksenia Rakowska. There are 9 branches: 65, 75, 86, 98, 131, 133, 134, 135, 137. The Chicago Regional Council was established in 1962. The regional president is Luba Kalin. There are 4 branches: 29, 36, 85, 101.
