ХХХI Конвенція СУА 97 CHRISTINE BOYKO VICE PRESIDENT – MEMBERSHIP & ORGANIZATIONAL AFFAIRS The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of oth- ers . – Mahatma Gandhi. After the elections at the convention, my first experience was to attend the National Board meeting held at Soyuzivka. We were all filled with excitement and enthusiasm. The second experience, at Marianna’s request, was to travel to Chica- go, where I had the privilege of meeting with two branches and the president of a third branch. I was received warmly and was present for their October monthly meetings. I was so very impressed with the work these women were doing. Residing in Scottsdale, Arizona, I could take part in meetings of the Executive Board only by tel- econference. I also participated in quarterly teleconference meetings with both branches at Large East Coast and West Coast and once by invitation with the Regional Councils. I attended each Annual National Board meeting in the fall of 2014, 2015, and 2016. Due to illness I was not able to perform my duties for a few months. I am very grateful to the en- tire Board and the office administrator for their compassion and understanding during those difficult times. Even before I held my current position, I would travel to San Diego for the annual House of Ukraine Labor Day Festival, where I manned a table with information about the UNWLA in hopes of helping to start a branch there. My speech focused on explaining who we are and encouraging new im- migrants to join. Their community is enjoying a revival. Hopefully, in the future, it will include a UN- WLA branch. If you ever travel to San Diego, visit the Balboa Park House of Pacific Relations Interna- tional Cottages. The House of Ukraine was one of the first built there. I received word from a former member of our Phoenix branch who now lives in Texas that there was a travelling Kobzar brought over by a volunteer from Ukraine. The Ukrainian troops signed it, Rusla- na signed it, and it began its travels in New York. Andriy Gorobetz brought it to Phoenix, Tucson, then on to the Grand Canyon and to California, stopping in San Francisco. Through him I found a connection with a group of Ukrainians in Dallas, Texas. Also, in speaking with one of our members, I found out that her daughter had moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where there is a small community and possible interest in start- ing a new UNWLA branch in the future. There are so many possibilities to explore ... Our committee member Marta Burachok organized a book signing by Marian Rubchak in No- vember 2015 at The Ukrainian Museum in hopes of stirring interest in the UNWLA. Marta was also ex- tremely helpful in setting up and manning the UNWLA booth at the Soyuzivka Festival. She was inspira- tional in her approach to igniting interest from non-members to join. A good deal of my time is devoted to answering questions about Ukrainians in a certain city or town, whether there is a branch in a certain location, etc. I receive emails and sometimes phone call inquiries. Acting on a suggestion from Orysia Zinycz, BAL East Co-Liaison, I created a map of all the Regional Councils and Bran- ches at Large for our website, so that visitors to the site can locate the nearest Regional Council or Branch at Large.
