88 ХХХІ Конвенція СУА signed a brochure. Concurrently, on January 25th, the NYC chapter of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America organized a rally in support of Savchenko. I was invited to speak and reminded those present of our organization’s long history of acting in defense of human rights. On March 4, 2015, I attended “Ukrainian Day” in Washington, D.C. with Roksolana Misilo, VP of Public Relations for the UNWLA. This event is organized annually by Ukrainian National Information Service. We attended the House Committee on Foreign Relations hearing “Ukraine Under Siege” where the Honorable Victoria Nuland, Assistant Secretary, spoke. This was followed by an official visit with Congressman Elliot Engel (U.S. Representative for New York's 16th congressional district), Vice Chair of the House Committee on Foreign Relations. March 9–20, 2015 brought two weeks of events, panels, and discussions at the Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations. Officially titled “ Beijing + 20,” this conference celebrated and followed up on the 4 th World Conference on Women held during the summer of 1995- the very first time representatives appeared from Ukraine as an independent state. The UNWLA, as a member of the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations (WFUWO), which has NGO (non-governmental organization) status at the UN, served as delegates to these events and/or participated in both sessions. I and R. Misilo officially represented the UNWLA at this year’s CSW. On July 30, 2015, I was invited to speak at a rally of solidarity to protest the illegal imprisonment of Nadiya Savchenko and other Ukrainian prisoners. The NYC Branch of UCCA and the Organization in Defense of Four Freedoms organized the rally, which took place at the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation in New York City. On March 9, the UNLWA participated at a rally held at Columbus Circle in New York City, calling for the release of Nadiya Savchenko. Mariya Andriyovych, Member at Large, delivered messages from the UNWLA and from myself. On Saturday, September 17, 2016, the Princeton Club of New York hosted a symposium present- ed by the Center for US-Ukraine Relations and commemorating Ukraine’s 25th anniversary. The UN- WLA was one of 14 sponsoring organizations. This outstanding day-long event saw historians, academ- ics, political figures, journalists and diplomats discuss Ukraine’s distant and recent past, followed by an assessment of Ukraine’s future. I was invited to participate in the symposium by introducing Mustafa Dzhemiliev and Paul Roderick Gregory, wrapping up the formal discussion portion. Princeton Club symposium December 1, 2016 brought a Ukrainian Historical Encounters Series Special Event “Ukraine at 25: A December 1 st Remembrance”. This event spotlighted the 25 th anniversary of the date on which over 91% of Ukraine’s electorate voted to support Ukraine’s declaration of independence. The evening forum was held at the Shevchenko Scientific Society in New York City and brought together scholars, diplomats and witnesses of the historic events that led to Ukraine’s renewed independence. As UNWLA president, I was invited to open the program and introduce Professor Taras Hunczak, a renowned historian and one of the eyewitnesses of this historic event.
