ХХХI Конвенція СУА 87 Ukrainian World Congress On August 25-26, 2016, the UWC (Ukrainian World Congress) annual meeting was held at the Taras Shevchenko National University in Kyiv. Among the panel talks, I participated in a discussion on the diaspora’s social welfare projects (with acting Minister of Health, Dr. Ulana Suprun.) As a member of the Board of Directors of the UWC (representing WFUWO), I participate in all conference calls sched- uled by the UWC President. National Council of Women of Ukraine On December 3 rd , 2015, we met with Dr. Ludmilla Porokhniak-Hanovska, President of the Na- tional Council of Women of Ukraine, and some of her membership, as well as with Maria Savchenko, mother of the imprisoned Nadia Savchenko. We maintain contact with NCW of Ukraine via our annual WFUWO meeting attendance . National Women’s League of Ukraine On December 12 th, 2015, and on the invitation of Oreslava Chomyk, President of the National Women’s League of Ukraine, I and Vera Kushnir attended the annual National Board meeting. Prior to the official opening of the meeting, an interview was given to L’viv TV. At this conference, the UNWLA received certificates of appreciation from Archbishop Ihor Wozniak of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and Patriarch Filaret of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Kyivan Patriarchate. In addition, the Di- rector of the regional children’s hospital passed along his personal gratitude through President Oreslava Chomyk. The UNWLA’s cooperation and partnership continues with our sister organization, as is con- firmed in my report as well as the report of our Social Welfare Chair. We thank Oreslava Chomyk for her graciousness and hospitality during our visits. SHARING UKRAINE’S “STORY” In early September, 2014, I had the opportunity to discuss the situation in Ukraine with Helen Viksnins, host of “In Our Voices” on WPFW 89.3FM radio in Washington, D.C. I was joined by Vera Andrushkiw, Vice President of U.S. Ukraine Foundation, and film producer Olha Onyshko. Topics touched upon included the type of work our organization supports and the current concerns of the women of Ukraine. We thank Ms. Viksnins for giving us the opportunity to bring Ukraine’s plight to the Wash- ington, D.C. listeners. In 2015, we supported and honored the physical and emotional strength of Lt. Nadiya Savchenko, a member of Ukrainian Parliament and delegate to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. The UNWLA called for New York City diaspora organizations to come together and jointly work towards a press conference to be held on January 26, 2015—the day which had been designated a global “Free Nadiya Savchenko” day by Nadiya’s attorneys. An ad hoc committee was formed, to be led by the UN- WLA; the committee included representatives from UNA, UCCA (National and local NY), the WFUWO, the Ukrainian World Congress, Razom , Ukraine Abroad, the Ukrainian Federation of America, Plast , and Advancing Human Rights. The goal of the press conference was to raise awareness about the current condition of Lt. Nadiya Savchenko, the circumstances of her captivity, and her hunger strike. Due to scheduling conflicts of sev- eral high-profile invitees (congressmen and UN Am- bassadors), the conference did not take place but demonstrated the benefit of organizational partner- ship. For this occasion, UNWLA composed and de- __________________________________ Rally in defense of Nadiya Savchenko , Jan 2015
