ХХХI Конвенція СУА 81 On May 18, 2015, I met with His Grace Bishop Daniel at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA in South Bound Brook, NJ to discuss our common projects. In the name of the UNWLA, Bishop Daniel was given $10,000 to reach out to the wounded soldiers and refugees from Eastern Ukraine. Bishop Daniel departed for his mission during the week of May 25 th and provided us with pictures and receipts upon his return. ___________________________________ Meeting with Bishop Daniel and Metropolitan Antony, Bound Brook, NJ (UOC of USA) “Prostir Nadii” SUA’s largest single project since the last Convention While visiting Ukraine in December of 2015, we were apprised of the promising work at The Mental Health Institute (MHI) at the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU). Dr. Oleh Romanchuk, direc- tor of the MHI, and Nataliya Klymovska, UCU’s Vice President of Development and Communication, discussed with us the harrowing status of PTSD in Ukraine and the Ukrainian medical profession’s lim- ited capacity for addressing this problem. The MHI’s commitment to improving the lives of those suffer- ing from the condition aligned with the UNWLA’s directives and motivations, and we were invited to be involved with this important project. After returning to NYC, I presented my information about the program (mission statements, budgets, timeline, etc.) to the UNWLA Executive Board as well as to Social Welfare Chairperson Lidia Bilous and her committee. The Executive Board unanimously approved the project, and the Social Wel- fare Committee expressed its full support for this initiative. An official agreement with the Ukrainian Catholic Education Foundation in Chicago was signed on March 13, 2016, including the condition that soldiers, their families and the families of the fallen be given access to treatment free of cost. An initial donation of $100,000 was deposited into the account established for this project at the Ukrainian Catholic Education Foundation in Chicago. While in Ukraine in August 2016, we were given a tour of the Mental Health Institute’s Prostir Nadii facility, which officially opened on November 21, 2016. The broad focus of this facility is to raise awareness about mental health in general; the more specific focus is to train professionals in modern treatment approaches to PTSD, to establish the clinic, and to create the specialized programs to provide appropriate PTSD therapy.
