80 ХХХІ Конвенція СУА MARIANNA ZAJAC PRESIDENT OF THE UKRAINIAN NATIONAL WOMEN’S LEAGUE OF AMERICA As I sum up our joint achievements during my last three-year term as UNWLA president, I must share that this period has been both a historical and challenging time for our organization. The UNWLA has taken on the important task of advocating for Ukraine here in the United States while simultaneously developing and executing humanitarian efforts during this tumultuous time. While we all cheered at our last Convention for the election of a democratic President in Ukraine, it was not long after when violence and aggression in the eastern regions called us to focus on a plan to aid our fellow Ukrainians, which we did- very successfully! Since the XXX Convention, the UNWLA has also celebrated 90 years of leadership in the diaspo- ra of the United States, uniting women of Ukrainian descent in friendship and with unifying goals. During the weekend of October 16–18, 2015 we celebrated our history while looking into the future with a cele- bratory Banquet, accompanied by a new exhibit at The Ukrainian Museum in honor of our 90th anniver- sary: “The Ukrainian Diaspora: Women Artists 1908-2015”. It was my honor to represent our membership both in Ukraine and in the United States at the events and meetings described below. I thank each of our branches and every one of our members for their cooperation, commitment, good-heartedness, and understanding toward human suffering. The UN- WLA profile has been risen significantly in Ukraine as our charitable and humanitarian efforts have touched so many lives across the country. Thank you, and God bless! PRIORITIZING HUMANITARIAN AID War Victims’ Fund The Ukrainian National Women’s League of America (UNWLA) announced the launch of its humanitarian Aid to Ukrainian War Victims program shortly after our Convention in November of 2014. The decision was made by our Social Welfare committee to provide financial assistance to the wounded and the families of the fallen – directly, from our hands to theirs. With the boundless help of Dr Mariya Furtak, the UNWLA representative for Social Welfare projects in Ukraine, and Dr. Vasyl Pazyniak, for- mer member of Parliament, we were able to accomplish this monumental effort. Our supporters have been most generous in their contributions toward our various initiatives. Our largest donation towards this cause was graciously made by Irena Homotyuk-Zielyk in the amount of $100,000 shortly before her passing in 2015. I also cannot pen this report without acknowledging with deep gratitude the continuous support of the New York Self-Reliance Federal Credit Union (Samo- pomich). The Credit Union’s Board of Trustees has always been most understanding about the develop- ment of new UNWLA projects. The launch of this particular project involved funding the shipment costs for a container of medi- cal equipment and supplies to Ukraine. These were procured by Dr. Gennadiy Fuzaylov of Doctors Col- laborating to Help Children (DCtoHC) and donated by Boston-area hospitals. During my trips to Ukraine since the 2014 Convention (with Financial Secretary Vera Kushnir in December 2015 and Roksolana Misilo in August 2016), we were able to personally visit the wounded in the hospitals of Kyiv, Dnipro, Zaporizha, and L’viv. Looking into the eyes of a young man who has sacri- ficed so much to defend his country is motivation and incentive to continue UNWLA efforts.
