ХХХI Конвенція СУА 53 Warmest greetings to all Delegates and Guests of the XXXI Convention of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America ! “OUR MEMBERSHIP – OUR STRENGTH !” The understanding of and belief in this Convention’s motto is the fundamental reason for the UNWLA’s successes of the past 92 years. It is each member’s commitment, dedica- tion and hard work which results in our wide-range of accomplishments. But only TO- GETHER do we define the strength of our organization ! I thank and congratulate each one of our delegates for her attendance as we review these successes but also plan and strategize for the future. I thank each UNWLA member for her individual contribution to our collective goals. Congratulations ! Those of us who attended the last Convention in Tarrytown, New York, can easily re- call how we rejoiced when we received the news from Ukraine as the election results were announced that Petro Poroshenko was voted in as President of Ukraine ! Unfortunately, his election has guaranteed neither peace nor stability to Ukraine. And, as the events in Ukraine devolved since then, the UNWLA quickly reacted and responded, focusing on its citizens’ humanitarian needs for the past three years. And it is only due to our membership nationwide that we’ve been able to effectively advocate for Ukraine here in the U.S. and simultaneously extend a hand of moral and financial support to those in Ukraine. Once again, thank you to our membership! Since the 2014 Convention, we have celebrated the 90 th anniversary of our beloved or- ganization as well as the 40 th anniversary of the Ukrainian Museum established by the UN- WLA in New York City. These were indeed momentous and historical occasions as we fully understood that our organization united both immigrations and generations of women of Ukrainian descent in order to establish and also nourish both of these institutions ! This year, during 2017, we celebrate the 50 th anniversary of the UNWLA Scholarship Program, a pro- ject which evolved from the social welfare program and has touched the lives of thousands of students in Ukraine, Brazil, Poland as well as other countries. In 2017 we also recognize the 50 th anniversary of the Kovaliv Fund – a project which offers a platform for recognition of authors of both literary and historical works. Thank you to our scholarship sponsors and to the Kovaliv family for entrusting the UNWLA with these important and very effective as- signments. While celebrating our past accomplishments during this prestigious gathering, it is also clearly our obligation to strive towards ensuring our organization’s future. We need to assess if and how we need to change in order to adjust to today’s landscape. We can all agree that change is a constant but If we work together with the convention motto in mind – “our membership – our strength” – our future can only be bright and prosperous !
