246 ХХХI Конвенція СУА January On January 30, 2016, our members joined Ridna Shkola staff in an effort to beautify the area around Pokrova Ukrainian Catholic Church, where weekly Ridna Shkola classes are held and where our annual Easter Bazaar takes place. February February 28, 2015 – We celebrated the life of Lesya Ukrainka. Tetyana Lytvynchuk organized a talk and video presentation, followed by a buffet for our members. February 2016 – We actively supported Jeremiah’s Hope, a mission based in Abilene, Texas, that was shipping another 40-foot container of supplies to Ukraine. Their aim is to help meet the needs of orphan ministries. At the same time, we collected other items to support the Ukrainians in San Antonio, who were also sending parcels to Ukraine to help the military and other victims of the war in Eastern Ukraine. March–April On March 29, 2015, March 20, 2016, and April 9, 2017, we held our annual Ukrainian Easter Bazaar. May In 2015, we organized a campaign to send letters and cards to Nadiya Savchenko. On May 4, 2015, our branch mailed over 45 birthday cards to Nadiya, from members and others, including drawings from Rid- na Shkola students. Many others mailed their cards/letters individually. May 21 – Den Vyshyvanky , the official celebration day in Ukraine. In Houston, we change the date to a Friday or Saturday evening to increase attendance. We create an event on Facebook, with the help of our younger members. As a result, we have been getting increased attendance since our first cele- bration in 2015! A fun occasion for members and potential members to meet! In late May of each year, during the Ridna Shkola Ukrainian School of Houston graduation cere- mony, we support graduates with a stipend to help continue their studies. In 2016, we also supported Rid- na Shkola with a donation to help send three students to Ukrainian dance camp at Soyuzivka. On May 31, 2015, our Ukrainian community had a visitor, Andriy Gorobets, who brought the traveling Kobzar to Houston – Kobzar na Storozhi . Andriy joined our community at the Ridna Shkola Ukrainian School of Houston graduation celebration. This Kobzar , a copy of Taras Shevchenko’s poetry, has a very special meaning. It was sent from New York to the front lines of Eastern Ukraine, for soldiers and volunteers in the area, and passed from town to town, from checkpoint to checkpoint. The book re- turned to America and continued its journey through New York, Florida, Louisiana, and Texas. The book is a recording of greetings and well wishes for the soldiers fighting to protect the future of our beloved Ukraine. I signed the Kobzar on behalf of our UNWLA Branch 118, to send a positive moral message to those fighting to protect the borders of Ukraine. It will continue to be a “travelling Kobzar ,” sharing the poetry of Taras Shevchenko and the support of all Ukrainians and common-minded people in Ukraine and throughout the Ukrainian diaspora for those who put their lives in danger to protect Ukraine. June–July Vacation time, since most members are traveling. August Every year, we join the Ukrainian American Cultural Club of Houston and Pokrova Ukrainian Catholic Church to celebrate Ukrainian Independence Day. September We participate in the Annual Houston Slavic Heritage Festival every year. Our branch mans a booth with information about our organization, along with ethnic items for sale and on display. Ukrainian dancing that day is performed by Trepet, the Ridna Shkola dancers.
