ХХХI Конвенція СУА 245 UNWLA BRANCH 118, HOUSTON, TEXAS BRANCH-AT-LARGE Branch 118 celebrating the 90 th Anniversary of the UNWLA, October 24, 2015. Standing (l-r): Martha Uschak-Noukas (Treasurer), Halyna Balaban-Seniw, Natalia Bovkun-Bobrovnyk, Christine Mycio-Spring, Luda Dovzhuk, Oksana Martinez, Ulyana Pinchuk, Marusia Ilnytskyj, Pam Uschak (Vice President, partially hidden), Nadija Balaban-Sulyukmanov, Olha Hirka (Secretary), Mariya Zhuk, Christine Puzyk, Tetyana Lytvynchuk, Slava Detsyk, Svitlana Krutikov, Nadia Buchai, Juliana Tychowsky-Dankowich, Maria Gracia O’Connell, Nicole Dijak. Sitting (l-r): Chrystyna Myndiuk-Bryndzia (President), Justyna Uschak, Josephina Ko- tarba, Evhenia Balaban A year in the life of UNWLA Branch 118 – Houston, Texas From January through March, we have many meetings and an agenda for our annual fundraiser, the Easter Bazaar (always on Palm Sunday). Over a series of weekends, we buy supplies and prepare and cook the food that we serve that day – pyrohy , pelmeni , kapusta with kielbasa , borscht , and stuffed cab- bage rolls, among other delicious choices for the Easter Bazaar attendee. Our members also collectively bake around 150 pasky . The majority of the baking and cooking is done by Evhenia Balaban, Marijka Zhuk, Slava Detsyk, Justyna Uschak, Josephina Kotarba, Olha Dub, Nadiya Sulyukmanov, Halyna Sen- iw, and Christine Kotarba Van Horn. The Bazaar includes a pysanka demonstration/class, performances by the Trepet Ridna Shkola Ukrainian dancers and other dance groups or singers organized for the event, and a fantastic raffle. We also have a variety of wonderful vendors that day. It’s a fun-filled day that re- quires many helping hands from our Houston community and the cooperation of all our members – and it’s always worth the effort! Although we’re busy enough with the preparation for the Easter Bazaar, we organize, support, and take an active part in other events that come up. Our Branch 118 is not a large group of women – there are only 24 members, and the number var- ies for many reasons. Sadly, in the past six months we have lost 2 very dear members. Natalia Bovkun- Bobrovnyk, barely 50 years old, passed away in August 2016. She was a vibrant and extremely helpful member who was always ready to help. “Shanovna Natalia” is sorely missed by our members and the en- tire Ukrainian Houston community. In January 2017, we lost another smiling face who always helped us out at the Easter Bazaar. Mary Bejmuk was a highly talented quilter who donated her quilts to be auc- tioned off at our Easter Bazaar. It was very sad to say goodbye to these wonderful members of our branch. Our younger future members are busy studying, getting new jobs, getting married, and starting their own families. We are hopeful that they will join our branch in the near future. Regardless of the number of members, Branch 118 is an active community of women who work for the promotion of Ukrainian culture and Ukraine in Houston. We wholeheartedly support the various efforts of the UNWLA through monetary donations. Events throughout the year ...
