234 ХХХI Конвенція СУА The continuing volunteer work by Branch 98 members for the Scholarship Program resulted in a credit of $14,410.09 for their efforts in 2016. The branch supported one stipend, and members supported 21. On May 14, 2016, the branch co-sponsored, with the Shrewsbury Monmouth County Library, a free public screening of the documentary film Freedom or Death , by New York filmmaker Damian Ko- lodiy. The film highlighted the revolutionary events that took place in Kyiv in 2014, starting with the peaceful protests by students that escalated into bloody clashes between government forces and demon- strators at Maidan Square. It chronicled those events first-hand, with footage from the front lines of the uprising and one-on-one interviews. A lively question-and-answer period followed the screening. Politics aside, Branch 98 then sought to raise local community awareness of Ukrainian arts. On October 29, 2016, an exhibit and lecture titled Heart on Fire: Folk Art from Ukraine was presented at the Shrewsbury branch of the Monmouth County Library. Art collectors Natalie Pawlenko and her husband Dr. Iouri Michtchenko presented a multi-media program that focused on the art form known as Petrykiv- ka. Branch President Nadia Jaworiw introduced both Ms. Pawlenko, who serves on the Board of Trustees of The Ukrainian Museum in New York City, and Dr. Michtchenko, who is a member of the Museum’s Programming Committee. Ms. Pawlenko explained that they both share a passion for this art form. A lec- ture that delved into the history, symbolism, methods, and media of this vibrant art form followed, with on-screen representations enhancing the lecture as well as the many original art works that were dis- played. The audience was free to ask questions, to stroll through the exhibit, and to purchase any work on display. The cover of the December issue of Our Life featured a work by Petrykivka master painter Hal- yna Nazarenko. Also in the issue was an article by Secretary Irene Krawczuk that detailed the event. Branch 98 members continue to support The Ukrainian Museum. Fundraising also took place during the year. Our annual picnic was hosted by Treasurer M. Ory- sia Jacus, and the Christmas Party was hosted by Luba Bilowchtchuk. Two members of Branch 98 reached a notable milestone in 2016. Anna Krawczuk and M. Orysia Jacus became octogenarians and were honored at individual luncheons. They were feted with cake and a Mnohaya Lita chorus. Irene Krawczuk, Secretary Members of UNWLA Branch 98 extend best wishes for a successful XXXI UNWLA convention, fruitful deliberations and election of officers. May God bless!
