ХХХI Конвенція СУА 233 President for 13 years, was praised and thanked for her service by our new President. She was presented with flowers at our February meeting and acknowledged again at a later meeting. Regarding the UNWLA Scholarship Program, a total of $12,080.82 was credited to branch ef- forts. This amount included one stipend by the branch and 19 stipends by members and friends. The branch continued to follow political events in Ukraine during the year and sought to bring community awareness to the country’s plight. On October 10, 2015, in cooperation with the Shrewsbury Monmouth County Library, Branch 98 co-hosted an informational presentation about current events in Ukraine. We invited Professor Alexander J. Motyl of Rutgers University – Newark to address the public at this free event. His selected topic was “Ukraine: A Country at War with Russia.” Professor Motyl ex- pounded upon the annexation of Crimea, the insurgent fighting in the Donbas, Ukrainian vs. Russian mili- tary might, the effect of sanctions on Russia, the need for military assistance for Ukraine, and other as- pects of the ongoing conflict. An article highlighting the event, penned by Secretary Irene Krawczuk, ap- peared in the November issue of Our Life as well as in The Ukrainian Weekly . L-R: Victoria Mischenko, M. Orysia Jacus, Anna Krawczuk, Professor Motyl, Nadia Jaworiw, Irene Krawczuk, Luba Bilowchtchuk The year included our traditional fundraiser, a Christmas Party hosted by member Halyna Jaku- bowcyz. Earlier in the year we enjoyed a picnic hosted by Treasurer M. Orysia Jacus. The year ended on a sad note with the passing on December 4 of our founder, godmother, and member, as well as UNWLA and NJ Regional Council honorary member, Maria Polanskyj. She had served the UNWLA for over 50 years in many capacities, and since 2002 as the National Chair of the UNWLA Scholarship/Children-Student Sponsorship Program. The UNWLA Memorial Fund now bears her name. Branch 98 began 2016 with its annual meeting on February 2. In attendance were the NJ Region- al Council President, Ksenia Rakowsky, and Vice-President Olha Basarab. Also in attendance were two new members, Halyna Lojko and Helena Blyskun. After the formality of the reports, Olha Basarab thanked the branch for its work over the past year in support of UNWLA programs and acknowledged the volunteer efforts of our members in support of the Scholarship Program. President Rakowsky presented an overview of UNWLA social welfare initiatives in Ukraine and noted that the NJ Regional Council had succeeded in purchasing an industrial washing machine for a geriatric center in Ukraine with donations from NJ branches. Branch President Nadia Jaworiw announced that members had voted to acknowledge the work of a number of members. Outgoing President Victoria Mischenko was honored for her 13 years of service with the title of “Honorary President of Branch 98”; Certificates of Appreciation were awarded to M. Orysia Jacus for outstanding service as Treasurer, and to Irene Krawczuk as Secretary. An article in the March issue of Our Life by Secretary Irene Krawczuk highlighted this meeting.
