220 ХХХI Конвенція СУА Spearheaded by our Social Welfare Chair Ulana Markiv, and with donations obtained by our members, we’ve sent goodwill packages to orphanages in Chernivtsi, the Karitas Center in Kyiv, and the Miles Jesu Girls’ Home in Birky. We continue our efforts to support orphaned children in Ukraine. Branch 85 devotes much time and effort to supporting the UNWLA Scholarship Program. We participate in the St. Nicholas Winter Market annually, selling beautifully decorated boxes of home-baked cookies. The funds raised are dedicated to our scholarship program. Organized by our Scholarship Com- mittee Chair Natalka Mycyk, our members held a collection at one of our many Ukrainian churches, St. Joseph the Betrothed. We exceeded our collection goal of funding two scholarships for a period of two years. This enabled us to make a donation to the Maria Polanskyj Scholarship Fund. For the past 18 years, our branch has participated in the annual Christmas Around the World event at Chicago’s prestigious Museum of Science and Industry. In early November, members and several helpful ladder-climbing spouses decorate the Ukrainian tree (in the museum’s rotunda) with hundreds of hand-crafted, Ukrainian-themed ornaments. Each December, Committee Chair Christine Dziuk organizes the Ukrainian program featuring various local dance groups and choirs. In 2014, 2015, and 2016, visitors enjoyed performances by the Cherubic Voices Children’s Choir and the Iskra School of Ukrainian Dance. The program is always well attended by museum visitors, who are treated to a concert of Ukrainian carols and traditional folk dancing while learning about Ukrainian Christmas traditions. Branch 85 members actively and enthusiastically support UNWLA Chicago Region activities, events organized by other branches, as well as local Ukrainian community events. In addition, several members hold important leadership positions in the Chicago Regional Council. Communication among members and the sharing of ideas have been increased by frequent emails, surveys, and updates, and via our Facebook page. The officers and members of Branch 85 extend our best wishes for a successful XXXI UNWLA Convention!
