Yaroslav Kostyk, Luba Nakonechna, Deanna Rajsz, Daria Boychew, Svyatoslava Goy Strom. Front row (l-r): Nina Slavinsky, Maria Hugel, Anna Pleskun, Lyubov Kovalishin, Nadia Rajsz, Iryna Kostiuk, Sinaida Lewycky Branch 62 is small but very active. The women of this branch attend and support the two Ukrain- ian churches in Glen Spey: St. Volodymyr’s Ukrainian Catholic Church and Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church. These are the anchors of our community, and we support each church by helping with their picnics, festivals, and other fundraising events. Our members help by making food items like varenyky , kapusta , holubtsi , and home-baked goods. In addition to supporting our churches, our members are involved with our own bazaars and events, through which we raise money to support the many initiatives of the UNWLA. We sponsor many events and programs for our Ukrainian community as well as the surrounding community throughout the year – events such as Lesia Ukrainka, Taras Shevchenko, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Holodomor, and Ukrainian Independence Day. Some of our members are involved with our local library and girl scout groups, educating them on Ukrainian culture and showing them how to make Ukrainian foods, especially varenyky , which the residents of our local community can’t get enough of. Our branch was involved in sending clothes and various items to families in need in Ukraine. We also helped support the residents of a nursing home in Ukraine, and we supported other UNWLA efforts and initiatives. In the summer of 2014, I had the opportunity to travel with my two daughters to Lviv, where I had the pleasure of meeting the president of Soyuz Ukrainok of Ukraine, Orysia Chomyk, as well as Dr. Maria Furtak. While there, Dr. Maria Furtak and Orysia Chomyk took time out of their busy schedules to take us to one of the military hospitals in Lviv, where we met some of the brave young men having sur- gery and receiving rehabilitation for injuries sustained in battles in eastern Ukraine. We spoke to several of the wounded soldiers; they all had the same desire: to get better and get back to battle to defend their country. It was truly an eye-opener as to how dedicated these individuals are. I also had the opportunity to meet with Rusliana, a woman who heads an organization that helps families who have lost a husband or father or other relative in battle and are now struggling to survive. This trip showed me not only how beautiful Ukraine is but also what these people are going through to protect and defend their country and
