ХХХI Конвенція СУА 199 L-R: Assya Humesky, Oksana Ohar, Ruth Shamraj, Halya Pitiak, Irina Bondarenko. In 2015, we raised funds and sent packages of developmental toys, school supplies, and sweets to the Rehabilitation Center for Disabled Children in Romny, Ukraine. Two highly successful bake sales also enabled us to provide $1,200 for a Speech Therapy classroom. In 2016, Branch 50 sent $1,200 to the Rehab Center in Romny for the purchase of a wheelchair for the Center’s director. The funds were raised by generous donations from the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Jackson, Michigan, and a ceramics sale in Ann Arbor. A member of Branch 50 belonging to the Starfish Quilting Group at Immanuel Lutheran Church organized a quilting project for the benefit of children at Romny. In the spring of 2016, thanks to the tireless work and skilled hands of the quilters, we sent dozens of quilts to the Romny Rehab Center. In addition, three packages of children’s clothing donated by Immanuel Lutheran Church were sent to Rozvytok Hromady in Lviv, Ukraine. Children at the Leukemia Pediatric Center in Vinnytsya, Ukraine, received two packages of sweets and toys for Christmas. Throughout 2015-2016, Branch 50 was engaged in fundraising to help war victims in Ukraine. Twelve Ukrainian apparel sales were held at various venues in the Detroit area. The money we raised will contribute to the Adopt-a-Family program with Detroit Branches 96 and 119 to support the family of Andrij Leshkiv, a fallen soldier from Yavoriv, Ukraine, for a period of three years. The remaining funds will be used for medical treatment and rehabilitation of injured Ukrainian soldiers. In 2016, Branch 50 members also held an art sale, raising $310, which was sent to the widow of the fallen warrior Roman Kapacij in Poltava, Ukraine. Lydia Soja, a long-time Branch 50 member, passed away on November 20, 2015. We are in the process of establishing a UNWLA scholarship in her name.
