198 ХХХI Конвенція СУА UNWLA BRANCH 50, ANN ARBOR, MI DETROIT REGIONAL COUNCIL Standing, l-r: Oksana Posa, Halya Pitiak, Ulana Kushner, Daria Rothe, Luba Chapelsky, Irina Bondarenko, Natalie Grossman. Seated, l-r: Paranka Mazurek, Barbara Carson, and Elayne Eberhart. In 2014, Branch 50 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, responded to the events on the Maidan and the police shootings of protesters in Kyiv by collecting money from our members and organizing fundraisers for humanitarian aid for the victims’ families and medical aid for the wounded. We raised over $1,200 for Humanitarian Aid for Maidan. Our members were also very active in collecting and sending first aid kits and clothing to Ukraine. Another major project that year was preparing a 2015 calendar, “Euromaidan – Ukraine’s Revolution of Dignity,” to honor those who participated in the Maidan, and to focus attention on the crisis in Ukraine. Proceeds from the sale of the calendar were pledged to advance Ukrainian studies at the University of Michigan. During 2015-2016, Branch 50 donated $2,000 to the Weiser Center at the University of Michigan to support study and research on topics concerning Ukraine. Several students who have benefitted from that support have presented the results of their research by giving talks at Branch 50 meetings. For example, in April 2016, Grace Mahoney, PhD candidate in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, the recipient of a summer grant in Ukraine, presented a talk titled “Post- Revolutionary Activist Street Art.” Because we are located in Ann Arbor, Branch 50 benefits from close associations with scholars, researchers, and notable visitors from Ukraine. In November 2016, we had the pleasure of hosting a tea for Natalie Jaresko, Ukraine’s Minister of Finance (2014-2016), at the TeaHaus. Branch 50 has been an enthusiastic supporter of the UNWLA Scholarship Program. Between 2014 and 2016, we sponsored six scholarships in Ukraine. During this time, we also continued our annual support of $300 to Instituto Santa Olga in Prudentopolis, Brazil. In 2015, humanitarian aid was by far our most significant activity. Between April and July we contributed many hours to the efforts of the southeast Michigan Ukrainian community to collect and pack donations for Save Ukraine Now (SUN). Over $10,000 worth of clothing, toiletries, first aid supplies, walkers, and household items was collected in Ann Arbor through the collection drive at the University of Michigan and from residents and churches in Ann Arbor and Jackson, Michigan.
