194 ХХХI Конвенція СУА UNWLA BRANCH 38, DENVER, COLORADO BRANCH-AT-LARGE Standing, l-r: Nancy Hollinger, Luba Pyrih, Helena Schultz, Olena Mackey, Catherine Shaw, Areta Kolody, Nadja Myronenko. Seated, l-r: Maria Figlus, Oksana Sawchur, Inya Saldyt, Ania Savage, Olga Bugir. Members not pre- sent: Oksana Bantley, Lolita Clouser, Laryssa Dragan, Marina Dubrova, Dosia Fedak, Maria Penk-Bodnar, Maria Zozulynec. The highlight of Denver Branch 38 activities for the first half of 2016 was organizing a solemn memorial and focusing public attention on the 30 th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Continuing a tradition of nearly 30 years, the event was held at the landmark Chernobyl bench in Cheesman Park, Denver’s premier urban park. President Inya Saldyt reached out to the Denver City government and the Colorado Governor’s Office to obtain proclamations designating April 26 Chernobyl Remembrance Day. Branch Vice Presi- dent Catherine Shaw, Treasurer Olga Bugir, and longtime member Maria Figlus were dressed in tradi- tional Ukrainian blouses when they accepted the completed proclamation from the Denver City Council. The initial reading of the proclamation appeared on Denver’s community television channel. Olga Bugir and branch member Luba Pyrih made preparations for the solemn vigil at the Chees- man Park commemorative bench. The inscribed bench was erected in 1987 by the UNWLA and has served in intervening years as the meeting place for significant Chernobyl anniversaries. The placement of the granite bench was additionally significant as commemorative structures are not allowed in centrally located Cheesman Park. More than 50 people attended the hour-long event on a blustery afternoon as wind gusts tore at the many Ukrainian flags brought to the commemoration. The proceedings were in both English and Ukrainian. Catherine Shaw conducted the program in English, while branch member Dr. Oksana Ruda- Bantley translated into Ukrainian. Olga Bugir and her daughter read the city and state proclamations on the significance of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Former Denver City Auditor and former State Senator Dennis Gallagher, a long-time supporter of the Ukrainian community, spoke eloquently about the tragedy of Chernobyl not only for Ukraine, but for the entire world. The event ended with a candlelight vigil and a solemn prayer by the Rev. Vasyl Hnatikiwsky, pastor of the Ukrainian Catholic Church of the Transfig- uration of Our Lord in Denver.
