192 ХХХI Конвенція СУА UNWLA BRANCH 34, COHOES, NEW YORK CENTRAL NEW YORK REGION Back row, l-r: Christine Kyfor, Nina Lewyckyj, Hal- ya Hebert, Elizabeth Baran, Yaroslava Perry, Katrina Barsigian. Front row, l-r: Maria Mac- iuk, Irene Halibej, Ulana Omecinsky, Daria Kendsersky, Oksana Ciupka – President Branch 34 was established in 1930. In 2015, we celebrated 85 years of active membership with a brunch at the Gideon Putnam Hotel in Saratoga Springs, New York. Our branch is currently comprised of 19 members: mother and daughters who are active in local Ukrainian and American communities. For over 85 years, our branch has continued furthering Ukrainian traditions by sponsoring Christmas “Yalynka,” Easter “Sviachene,” and Mother’s Day and Father’s Day celebrations to which we invite our Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church parishioners and community. Four of our members teach at our local Ukrainian school. They were very active in planning the Holodomor commemorative event in Albany, New York, in November 2013, and other events since. They are also committee members who are actively working with New York State senators and assemblymen in sponsoring a bill to include the Holodomor in the New York State high school curriculum. We participated in a Ukrainian Day celebration marking 25 years of Ukrainian Independence in August 2016 in Watervliet, New York. We commemorated the 100 th anniversary of Lesia Ukrainka’s death with a parastas service after Mass and an educational presentation about this great Ukrainian woman; the display was then donated to our local Ukrainian school. March 2014 marked the 200 th anniversary of Taras Shevchenko’s birth. Each year, Ukrainian school students commemorate this event by presenting a program for our Ukrainian com- munity, in which our branch members actively participate. Our monthly meetings are held Sundays after Mass in the church hall of Sts. Peter and Paul. Funds are raised by sales of pyrohy , baked goods, and coffee, as well as by after- Mass Sunday brunches, which our parishioners enjoy. Our obligations to UNWLA are met yearly. Branch 34 is a member of The Ukrainian Museum in New York City, and all members subscribe to Our Life . Donations are regularly collected during these troubled times for humanitarian aid for Ukraine, and a student in Ukraine is sponsored yearly. Our members continue to visit the grave of the founding member of Branch 34, Olena Lototska, each year to offer prayers and place flowers on her grave. We also send holiday greetings and bring flowers to elderly branch members, and visit them and our parishioners. Our members actively participate in local as well as regional UNWLA meetings. We look for- ward to participating for many years to come for the good of the UNWLA and the Ukrainian nation. Compiled by Oksana Ciupka, President The Officers and Members of Branch 34 would like to wish the UNWLA a successful XXXI Convention! Mnohaya Lita!
