ХХХI Конвенція СУА 147 TAMARA STADNYCHENKO CORNELISON ENGLISH-LANGUAGE EDITOR OF OUR LIFE (From March 2016) After a long absence (life interferes) I returned to Our Life to work with my old colleague Lidia Slysh, who had assumed the duties of editor-in-chief. Mrs. Slysh and I had always worked well together, and we resumed our cordial and collegial relationship smoothly and comfortably, with the invaluable assistance and professional collegiality of Ms. Marie Duplak of Computoprint, whose technical expertise and attention to detail has always been appreciated, admired, and very helpful. Sometime during the year, life interfered again—this time in Mrs. Slysh’s universe, as she had to resign from her position as editor-in-chief of Our Life because of her husband’s illness. During this time, Our Life acquired a new Ukrainian-language editor, Lesya Topolia, with whom I have also developed a cordial and productive working relationship. Other familiar names and faces resurfaced—authors I had worked with years before, like Dr. Ihor Magun, whose monthly medical column continues to be a favorite with readers, and various UNWLA members who sent me articles many moons ago and now send new and interesting materials. Among these are Martha Noukas from Texas and Marie Cherviovskiy from Michigan (who pretty much gave me the shirt off her back, or at least from her closet, when I forgot to bring an embroidered Ukrainian blouse for the ceremonial group photo at the UNWLA convention held in Michigan). Another is Marianna Szczawinsky Crans of Branch 95, who wrote a loving tribute to her father many years ago and has evolved into a regular contributor. Another is Petrusia Sawchak of Philadelphia’s Branch 88, who is also a member of Our Life ’s editorial board. And then there’s Martha Bohachevsky Chomiak, whose creative endeavors are always inspirational and who always makes me feel smarter than I am. One happy part of returning to Our Life is working with a new coterie of authors whose work is also much appreciated. Among these are Roksolana Misilo, UNWLA VP for Public Relations; Olya Czerkas (whom I met decades ago at Plast camp in East Chatham, New York, and who now serves as one of the co-liaisons for Branches at Large); and Irena Gramiak of Branch 88, the daughter of two old friends I grew up with, who is a talented writer with exceptional instincts on how to address a variety of themes and topics. Then there’s Ivanka (Bulba) Olesnycky, New Jersey Regional Council’s Social Welfare Chair, whose article about a cooperative venture between the UNWLA and a Kyiv-based organization called Patriot Defense (May 2016), reconnected me to someone who introduced me to pizza when we were kids on holiday at the beach in Wildwood, New Jersey, and who later shared teenage adventures with me when we attended the same high school in Philadelphia. The sad part of returning to Our Life is seeing the names of people who were friends and colleagues and are no longer with us. Among these is Sonia Sluzar, whose wonderful article on Ivan Franko, originally published in the June 2007 issue, was recently resurrected and republished in an issue commemorating the 100th anniversary of Franko’s death (September 2016); another is Christine Pluta, with whom I shared a wild bus ride and many jokes at that aforementioned convention in Michigan; a third is Dr. Joanna M. Ratych, who always took the time to extend a kind word about my work. May they rest in peace knowing that they are fondly remembered. In closing, I extend my sincere thanks to all those who currently write and send articles for publication and also extend an invitation to all aspiring authors (as well as to those lucky souls who get the job by default because no one else volunteers to do it) to send more stuff for publication. Our Life exists because you contribute articles and photos and ideas; keep them coming. We ask authors and photographers to review and adhere to submission guidelines published in January 2017 issue of Our Life .
