14 ХХХI Конвенція СУА Many of the students assisted by the Scholarship Program chose to pursue studies in various branches of Ukrainian history, literature, art, pedagogy, ethnography, music, electronics, and so on (see the 7th report booklet). A major influence in their choices was having mothers who were able to pass on their cultural heritage to their children. We thank the leaders and members of Soyuz Ukrainok of Ukraine for their cooperation and for the establishment of a Scholarship Commission in the Executive Board of SUU. This made our work notably easier and enabled shared responsibility for the coordination and exe- cution of our joint project in Ukraine. We thank Iryna Kravchuk and Oryna Sokulska, who, with great dedication, take care of all matters and maintain responsibility for "their" students. We thank Tamara Melnyk and Larysa Kobelyanska, who understand the needs of students from impoverished families out- side of Kyiv and recommend them for scholarships. And we cannot forget the contributions of the late Alla Debeluk and Claudia Kobelyanska, whose belief in the youth of Ukraine has been rewarded by the impressive successes of their successors! We must also thank the catechists of the Sacred Heart of Jesus from the Institute of St. Olga in Brazil, led by Filomena Procek, for their dedicated religious and pedagogical efforts since 1944. We are also grateful to Meroslawa Krevei, Olga Korczagin, and Elvira Lozovei, who worked wholeheartedly with members of the UNWLA Scholarship Program. And let us also acknowledge the men who have been part of this incredible journey. Our coopera- tion with the Basilian Fathers, many of whose rectors were "our" students, continues to the present. We are immeasurably grateful to Bishop Dionisio Lachovicz, OSBM, not only for his wise counsel but also for his continuous contacts with us. We will never forget the late Bishop Efraim Krevey, who provided steadfast spiritual support throughout our work in Brazil. A sincere thank you should also go to all former and current scholarship students from their spon- sors for their conscientious efforts in their studies! We are proud of each of our students! We also acknowledge the support of the many people who responded to a call or a letter or an ar- ticle to become active and generous participants in this great enterprise. Many of these supporters have stood with us from the earliest days of the program. Others came on board later. From 1991, when Ukraine proclaimed its independence from the USSR, many Ukrainians in the diaspora continued their support by helping the youth of Ukraine. They understood very well the potential of the UNWLA’s en- deavors and decided to direct their support to the needs of the Ukrainian nation. All members of the UNWLA Scholarship Committee deserve our thanks, because for 50 years they dedicated their efforts and time to the success of our scholarship program. The impact of their work is underscored by the comments of Larysa Kobelyanska, one of our trusted and helpful associates in Ukraine. In her greeting to the UNWLA for the 50 th anniversary of the UNWLA Scholarship Program, Larysa Kobelyanska emphasized the meaning of the Scholarship Program: "You shared with our children not only money, but your belief in their patriotism and service to their country; you expressed your hopes for them, as future professionals; your expectations for the development of Ukraine and her respected place in the world. The scholarships that the children received were for them not only desired but also awaited, but even more important was the lesson of goodwill and kindness that they received from you. And I am sure they will remember it their entire lives." From the founding of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America in 1925 we have fought in the international arena to keep Ukraine "alive" before the world in times of its enslavement, es- pecially in the twentieth century. From the founding of the UNWLA Scholarship Program in 1967 it has been of utmost importance to us that the recipients of UNWLA scholarships were aware of their Ukraini- an heritage and were proud not only of their mother tongue but also of the country of their ancestors — Ukraine — and loved her. We were not alone! We are profoundly grateful to all who worked with us, both in the Ukrainian diaspora and in Ukraine, and to all who support us financially and morally. Only because of your support, understanding, and cooperation are we able to see the success of the UNWLA Scholarship/Children-Student Sponsorship Program. May God Bless You!
