138 ХХХІ Конвенція СУА UNWLA SCHOLARSHIP/CHILDREN-STUDENT SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM ANNA KRAWCZUK, UNWLA HONORARY MEMBER IN 2017 WE REACHED A MILESTONE! HAPPY 50 th ANNIVERSARY! Mission Statement: Enhance and create opportunities through education and preserve Ukrainian cultural heritage within and outside the United States of America. REPORT FOR 2014-2016 BRIEF HISTORY : Until 1967, student assistance was part of the UNWLA Social Welfare pro- gram. At the 1969 Convention, when Maria Chymynets was Chair, a resolution was passed to form the UNWLA Scholarship Program. It became a reality in 1971 under the leadership of Dr. Teodozia Sawyckyj. Dr. Sawyckyj established the UNWLA Scholarship Program as we know it today, focusing on Brazil and other South American countries where Ukrainians settled in the late 1890s. In 1981 Anna Krawczuk was elected UNWLA Social Welfare Chair, which included the existing UNWLA Scholarship Program. At the 1984 Convention, the UNWLA Scholarship Program was separated from Social Welfare and a separate UNWLA Scholarship Chair was established that included the UNWLA, Inc. Scholar- ship/Children-Student Sponsorship Program. Anna Krawczuk headed the first UNWLA Scholarship Pro- gram Standing Committee, followed in 1993 by Luba Bilowchtchuk and in 2002 by Maria Polanskyj, who developed our program in Ukraine. Since 1967, seven UNWLA Scholarship Program Reports have been published, with detailed fi- nancial reports, sponsor and donor listings, and graduates in their respective countries. 2014 With the shuddering reports from Ukraine that included Russian aggression and annexing of Cri- mea, we lost contact not only with Soyuz Ukrainok in Crimea but also with the students they had recom- mended. Our attempts to find them were futile. As the war escalated in eastern Ukraine, we lost contact with some students from Donetsk, Luhansk, and nearby oblasts. With the help of Oryna Sokulska, some of them were found living in other oblasts, even in Lviv. We received many letters from students regard- ing these events and were amazed at their patriotism and willingness to protect their homeland. Some did. Some made the ultimate sacrifice. 2015 UNWLA Scholarship Committee members continued their obligations when we learned, with sadness, that UNWLA Scholarship Chair Maria Polanskyj had become critically ill. I am grateful to UNWLA President Marianna Zajac for visiting Maria in the hospital, and to the many Branch 86 and Branch 98 members and friends who visited Maria on a daily basis. My thanks to M. Orysia Jacus, Luba Bilowchtchuk, Dr. Daria Nowakiwska Lissy, Nadia Ja- woriw, and Victoria Mischenko not only for their dedication to our cause but also for visiting Maria dur- ing her illness. Maria was loved and respected by all. Her funeral services were held on December 12, 2015, at St. John the Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey. A Funeral Mass was said by Rev. Dr. Bohdan Prach at St. George’s in Lviv, Ukraine, with students and some parents in attendance. Other services were held in Prudentopolis, Parana, Brazil, attended by scholarship recipients and Catechists of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
