128 ХХХІ Конвенція СУА Поранених хлопців у місті Дніпрі я відвідала 7 разів. В кількох поїздках мене супроводжував за власною ініціативою 83-літній легендарний отець Петро Зеленюх. Він молився над всіма тяжко пораненими, просив для них благословення Господнього. Іноді здавалося, що на наших очах відбуваються чудеса зцілення. Особливо хочу відзначити відвідання отцем Петром меморіалу невідомих загиблих захисників України. Під палючим сонцем майже 6 годин Отець відчитав молитви над кожною могилою, а їх було майже 200. В Харківському військовому шпиталі отцю Петру дозволили зайти у відділ реанімації і помолитись над кожним пораненим. І щира молитва разом із самовідданою працею лікарів створили чудо – всі п'ятеро смертельно поранених воїнів одужали. Згодом, зустрівши їх з родинами на реабілітації у Львові, я почула слова вдячності за допомогу Союзу Українок Америки і за щиру молитву отця Петра Зеленюха. Не можу не згадати і про Київський Центральний військовий шпиталь, де я зустріла двох леґендарних захисників України – генерала Героя України Ігора Гордійчука і молодого лейтенанта Володимира Геру, який ціною свого здоров'я врятував 400 наших воїнів. Його родичі щиро вдячні всім українцям Америки і не байдужим людям, які декілька місяців поспіль допомагали йому в реабілітації під час перебування в Америці. А ще були шпиталі Житомира, Запоріжжя, Луцька, Львова, і скрізь лунали слова подяки союзянкам за допомогу, за пам'ять і жертовне служіння Українському народу. Марія Фуртак, представник СУА у справах Суспільної Опіки в Україні, лікар вищої категорії, Львівський обласний онкологічний регіонально-діагностичний лікувальний центр . _______________________________ LIDA BILOUS SOCIAL WELFARE COMMITTEE Because of the long history of the Ukrainian people’s struggle for sovereignty, from its inception in 1925 the main objective of the UNWLA and its Social Welfare program has been to help Ukrainians in need throughout the world. The UNWLA was the first organization to send aid to famine victims of the Holodomor in 1932- 33. During the Holodomor (Ukrainian Famine-Genocide), it helped victims with care packages and in- formed the United States Congress about the atrocities perpetrated by Stalin and his henchmen. In the post-World War II era, when the “Iron Curtain” rose, and during the Cold War, open con- tact with the West was blocked by the Soviet Union. Communication between Ukrainians in Ukraine and those in the diaspora ceased. During the time when Ukraine was closed off to the Western world, the UNWLA Social Welfare program concentrated its efforts on the needy Ukrainian immigrants who sought freedom in other countries. It helped Ukrainian refugees in Brazil, Germany, Australia, and Argentina, to name just a few countries, by sending care packages and providing funds for scholarships, and in the U.S., by helping refugees find work and places to live. The Medical Aid Fund was established to help sick children in South America. After the fall of the Iron Curtain, the UNWLA Social Welfare program extended its work into Ukraine. There, we funded orphanages, nursing homes, homes for the mentally and physically disabled, and fresh air camps for children. Programs such as the Mother and Child Fund and the Grandmothers Fund (Babusia, still active today) helped victims of the war. When the world learned about the Chornobyl nuclear catastrophe of 1986, the Soviet Union was forced into opening some communication with the West. Once again, the UNWLA was in the forefront in sending aid to victims of this disaster. It formed the UNWLA Children of Chornobyl Medical Aid
