ХХ Х Конвенція СУА 97 SOPHIA HEWRYK THIRD VICE PRESIDENT FOR CULTURE I. The UNWLA has always paid special attention to education. We set up pre - schools svitlychkas , established a Scholarship Program, awarded stipends for scholarly works, and now the UNWLA became a founder of a unique Lectureship in Women’s Studies at the Ukrainian Catholic University in L’viv . Education is a key to success for a young person these days, particularly in Ukraine. University studies give young women an opportunity to become self - reliant and start believing in themselves as well as the success ful future of Ukraine. In 2011, delegates of the XXIX Convention of the UNWLA adopted a resolution “to inquire into the possibility to establish a UNWLA Endowment Fund for Lectureship in Women’s Studies at the Ukrainian Catholic University (UCU) in L’viv,” which is the only private university of its kind in Ukraine. After the Convention, members of the UNWLA Executive Board met with experts in this field as well as with representatives of UCU. The university offered to create an advisory board for the Wom- en ’s Studies program to coordinate the cooperation between the UNWLA and UCU ’s administration. At the annual meeting of the UNWLA National Board in October 2011, we organized a roundtable discussion about the importance of a Women’s Studies program for Ukrai ne. The participating experts Prof. Marian Rubchak, Dr. Oksana Kis’, Dr. Martha Kebalo , and Iryna Koshulap confirmed the relevance of the proposed lectureship. The following day, the UNWLA National Board voted to approve the Endowment Fund for the lectures hip at UCU. The project proved to be a success. In less than a year the Endowment Fund collected the needed $100,000. In September of 2012, UNWLA delegates attended the inaugural opening of the Women's Studies Lectureship at the UCU. I want to thank all th e UNWLA members for their moral and financial support for this project. All UNWLA members deserve recognition for The Mary Beck Conference H all in the Children’s Burn Unit of Lviv Hospital #8, the UNWLA Scholarship Fund, and the Lectureship in Women's Stud ies at UCU. Currently, the Women's Studies Lectureship is chaired by Prof. Martha Bohachevsky - Chomiak, and Dr. Halyna Tesliuk serves as the program coordinator. The Lectureship is popular among students and the local community. II. Foundations that aim t o support culture attest to the high educational level of our society. In 1967, the Lesia and Petro Kovaliv Fund was established when the Kovalivs decided to celebrate the ir 50th wedding anniversary by setting up a fund whose administration was entrusted t o the UNWLA. The interest from this fund is awarded annually as a merit - based prize which goes, in turns, to authors of liter- ary and historical works on Ukraine. It is my responsibility as UNWLA Vice President for Culture to an- nounce the call for nominatio ns in Our Life and Ukrainian - language newspapers, to select a jury, and to present the awards to the laureates. During the reporting period of 2011 - 2014, the awards from the Lesia and Petro Kovaliv Fund were given three times: Award in History: Prof. Serh iy Plokhy for his book Yalta, Price for Peace , “Viking,” 2010 edition. Head of the jury: Prof. Martha Bohachevsky - Chomiak. Award in Literature: Taking into account the quality of the submitted works, the jury decided to award only the first prize in three genres. The first prize for the collection of poetry was divided between: Larysa Lysha, Zirnula Zirnytsia , Kyiv: Yaroslaviv Val, 2010. Ostap Slyvynskyi, Adam , Chernivtsi: Meridian Czernowicz , 2012 . Prose: Dzvinka Matiyash, collection of short stories “I сторія про троянди, сіль і дощ ” [ A Story about Ros- es, Salt, and the Rain ], Kyiv: Tempora, 2012.
