82 ХХ Х Конвенція СУА I was delegated by the UNWLA President to represent our organization at the abovementioned receptio n. I took the opportunity to greet the esteemed guests and to inform them about the UNWLA and its major projects. My other article to Our Life — “Ihor ’ s Story: A Ukrainian Orphan Treated for Severe Burns at Shriners Hospital in Boston” — told the readers about the little boy Ihor, an orphan from Ukraine, who was brought to the United States to receive treatment for his severe burns at the prestigious Shriners Hos- pital in Boston. This became possible thanks to our cooperation with t he non - profit organization Doctors Collaborating to Help Children headed by Dr. Gennadiy Fuzaylov and Dr. Daniel Driscoll. By the way, the UNWLA accepts donations for the treatment of this boy. As I am writing these lines (February 2014), Ihor is back at S hriners Hospital for further treatment. I kept in touch with members of the UNWLA National Board and u pdated them on the news from UNWLA Headquarters. I wrote letters, greetings, and information bulletins, and assisted with compilation of circulars whenev er needed. Since the UNWLA Vice President chairs the Editorial Committee of the Convention Book, in September 2013 I wrote a detailed circular di scussing the preparation of reports and other materials for the Convention Book. I wrote thank - you letters to our contributors to the Combined Federal Campaign. As you may know, federal employees and members of the military have an opportunity to pledge donations to various participating charities, the UNWLA among them. It was one of m y duties to write to those donors in order to express our gr atitude for their support of UNWLA funds. In October of 2012, I particip ated in the 10th Congress of WFUWO in Toronto, Canada, where Oksana Sushko was elected the new WFUWO President. Together wi th other members of the UNWLA Executive Board, I attended the celebration of the 22nd anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence hosted by the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN, Yuriy Sergeyev, on the premises of the Ukrainian Institute of America i n New York. It was a good opportunity to meet foreign and American guests and introduce our organization to them. In the summer of 2013, together with UNWLA President and other Executive Board members, I had the pleasure to attend the celebration of the 7 5th anniversary of the Regional Council of Philadelphia. On September 24, 2013, together with UNWLA President and Welfare Committee Chair, Iryna Rudyk, I took part in a meeting of representatives of Ukrainian - American organizations with the Minister of So cial Welfare of Ukraine Natalia Korolevska. The meeting was held in the Ukrainian Consulate in New York. It gave us an opportunity to hear the Minister’s vision regarding social policies related to the unprotected population and to ask her about the issues which we found important, such as the existing needs and ways to meet them. On October 5, 2013, together with Financial Secretary Roma Shuhan and Vice President for Membership Anna Macielinski, I presided over the meeting organized for the presidents of t he UNWLA Regional Councils and Branches, treasurers and chairs of membership committees of the Regional Coun- cils of New York City, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Connecticut , and New York - Central. The meeting was attended by other members of the National Board. The participants found the meeting useful and advised us to hold similar events more often. On November 5, 2013, together with UNWLA President and Vice President for Culture, Sofia Hewryk, I attended the conference dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Holodomor, “Taking Measure of the Holodomor,” which took place at the Princeton Club in New York. The conference was informative and presented facts objectively. Even those of us who are familiar with the history of this tragic event could take something new from the seminar. One of the responsibilities of the First Vice President of the UNWLA is to administer the Eva Stashkiw Fund. Each year I submit the call for applications to Our Life and encourage our members to apply for the stipends. The Eva Stashkiw Fund, which was established with the money bequeathed to the UNWLA by a former member, provides scholarships for UNWLA members who wish to further their education in Ukrainian Studies. Our members can compete for stipends in the following categori es:
