ХХ Х Конвенція СУА 75 On Behalf of Ukraine On July 30, 2013, Geoffrey Pyatt was sworn in as U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine by United States Deputy Secre- tary of State, William J Burns in Washington, D.C. I had the distinct honor of representing the UNWLA at this event and took the opportunity to present Ambassador Pyatt and his wife with a copy of A Candle in Remembrance while also sharing a bit of UNWLA history and its many projects. M. Zajac with Ambassador Pyatt and his wife. On January 3, 2014, I along with leaders of Ukraini an - American diaspora organizations partici- pated in a meeting with Karen Donfrie d, special assistant to President Obama and senior director for Eu- ropean affairs at the National Security Council. The objectives of the non - partisan meeting were to further inc rease American support of the democratic process in Ukraine, to send a strong message to Kyiv that Ukrainian Americans stand with the opposition, and to strengthen our community’s relationship with the current administration. On January 23, 2014, the dias pora community of the Kerhonkson/Poughkeepsie area met with Congressman Christopher Gibson (R - 19 Legislative District of NY State) in Ellenville, NY. Taking the initiative to contact the office of the congressman proved to be rewarding as Congressman was f amiliar with the situation in Ukraine and immediately called his staff instructing them to put his name on House Resolution 447 as co - sponsor. On February 7, 2014, a group of community organization leaders, including myself, were invited to a meeting with Vice President Joe Biden in Washington, D.C. It was only after continuous lobbying and using all available contacts that such a high - level visit would be granted. The topic was U.S. support of Ukraine’s path to a democratic society. The situation, at the time of the writing of this report, has wors- ened; however, the U.S. government has, for all intents and purposes, taken the lead in supporting Ukraine. The democratic system works in the United States. Convinced of this, the UNWLA has been in- tensively in volved in disseminating news of the events in Ukraine as well as pointing out disinformation in all forms of the media. World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations (WFUWO) / World Congress of Ukrainians (WCU) In 2011, the annual Congress of the WCU took place on August 21 - 23 in the Art and Culture Center at the Kyiv Mohyla Academy in Kyiv, Ukraine. The UNWLA were represented by UNWLA Pres- ident, First Vice President Ulana Zinych, Vice President for Public Relations Lidia Bilous, and Archivist Oly a Drozdowycz. In 2012, the annual Congress of the WCU took place on September 7 - 9 in Anavyssos, Greece, at Eden Beach Resort Hotel. U N WLA representatives were not present. In 2013, the X World Congress of Ukrainians took place on August 20 - 22 at the Nation al Univer- sity “L’viv Polytechnic.” The slogan of the Congress was “ Contra spem spero !” These words by the cele- brated Ukrainian poet Lesya Ukrainka reflect the hope of the 20 - million strong Ukrainian diaspora for Ukraine’s better future, despite the serious challenges faced by the nation. During the past three years, I and UNWLA delegates have attended annual meeting and Congress of both the WFUWO and the WCU. I have submitted annual reports on UNWLA activity in 2011 and 2012 and a five - year report for the WCU Congress held in August of 2013. Iryna Rudyk, UNWLA Social Wel- fare Chairperson, also submits an annual report to the WCU Social Welfare Chairperson annually. In addi- tion, I participate at all WCU conference calls when they are called by the President.
