ХХ Х Конвенція СУА 73 attended a press conference focusing on the Crimean crisis in Ukraine. We had the opportunity to meet Ayla Bakkalli, USA Representative of the Crimean Tatar Assembly , and Rabbi Yakov Bleich, Head Rab- bi of Kyiv and Ukraine. Each offered their c ommunity’s unique perspective on events in Ukraine. Each supported the current albeit temporar y government in Ukraine and stressed only one goal — peace. A very pleasant UNWLA un- dertaking has been the partnering with the wife of the Ukrainian Ambassador to the UN, Dr . Natalya Sergeyev, in the annual hosting of the UN Ambassa- dor’s Wives Club at the Ukrainian Mu- seum or the Ukrainian Institute. In April of 2012, the wives of the UN Ambassadors were invited to join UNWLA members for an afternoon of celebrating Ukrainian culture and treasures ( pysanky and kilims ) at the Ukrainian Museum. From left: Dr. N. Sergeyev, M. Zajac, I. Sochynsky, K. Samilenko, M. Shust, and D. Me h rle. Ukraine We received the sad news of the passing of Atena Pashko in the early morning of March 21, 2012. “ At the founding congress that took place in Kyiv on December 20 - 22, 1991, the venerable Soyuz Ukrainok was officially revived, and Atena Pashko was elected its President. This was hardly a surprise since every p aragraph of the organization's b y - laws, every point in the resolutions, and every dream that was to be reflected in the future plans was weighed in her mind and heart. This was a time of hard, dedi- cated, yet inspiring work, and as a result, Ukraine's women received their distinctive voice in the society and an honorable p lace in the transformed Nation.” ( Ukrainka v istorii — Novi storinky. Kyiv, 2010.) Atena Pashko served as President of Ukraine's Soyuz Ukrainok for ten years, and throughout this time, she continued to defend and implement her vision for the organization. May she rest in peace! Lilia Hryhorowych (former Deputy of the Ukrainian Parliamen t) followed Atena Pashko and was President until December 2013 when Dr. Oreslava Khomyk was voted in. Ms . Hryhorowych was very helpful to the UNWLA in the execution of our projects in Ukraine and we wish her much success in her future endeavors. Oreslav a Khomyk was elected President in December of 2013 during the beginning of the turbu- lent events in Ukraine. We see from the organization’s website that President Khomyk has spearheaded letter - writing to the three former Presidents of Ukraine, calling on th em to take some major re- sponsibility in the building of a free and democratic Ukraine. We wish our sister organiza- tion well in these complicated times in the life of every Ukrainian. Meeting with Dr. O. Khomyk (elected President of Soyuz Ukrainok 12/2013) . Marianna Zajac with Olya Pastushenko on stage of L’viv Opera House.
