72 ХХ Х Конвенція СУА Parliament in Ottawa, Canada, where the Parliament issued a proclamation of recognition of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky for his basic moral princip les and his actions to safeguard the sanctity of life. Museum Board members were proud to host this historic event as only in unity there is hope. The United Nations The UNWLA annually participates in the sessions of the Commission on the Status of Wome n (CSW) , which are held in March. We are invited through our WFUWO membership which holds consul- tative status with the Economic and Social Council at the United Nations (ECOSOC). The CSW is a functional commission of ECOSOC. Every year, representatives of Member States gather at the United Nations in New York to evaluate progress on gender equality, identify challenges, set global standards , and formulate concrete policies to promote women's rights in political, economic, civil, social , and educa- tional fie lds. At the invitation of the WFUWO’s main representative to the UN, I moderated a CSW (56th ses- sion) panel on March 1, 2012. The event, co - sponsored by the Permanent Mission of Ukraine to the United Nations, was entitled “Rural Women: Realities and Initiatives toward Empowerment.” The event began with an introduction from the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the UN, Ambassador Yuriy Sergeyev. The panelists Olena Suslo va, Dr. Martha Kichorowska Kebalo, and Dr. Kathryn Vasilaky were unanimous in their conclusion that the increasing rates of poverty and decreasing rates of employment and access to both education and health services among women in rural areas of Ukraine are alarm- ing. During that same session, on March 7, 2012, Lida Bilous, Vice President for Public Relations, and I had the opportunity to attend a session with Ivan Simonovic, Assistant Secretary - General of the Of- fice of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. At that meeting, we approached Mr. Simonovic about women’s rights and profile in Ukraine. At this time (March 2014), Mr. Simonovic is dealing with human rights’ abuses in general in the Crimea. On March 3, 2013, during the 57th session of the CSW, the UNWLA hosted a reception at its Headquarters for representatives from t he International Council of Women, the National Council of Women of the United States, and the WFUWO. The gathering was joined by NCW Ukraine President Liudmyla Yakovlieva and Orysia Sushko, the then newly elected WFUWO President. On March 6th, Ambassador Sergeyev invited CSW attendees to the Mission for a meeting with Iryna Lutsenko and Va- lerij Patskan, members of the Ukrainian Parliament. Discussions touched upon the cooperation and sup- port of the diaspora in moving human rights issues forward in Ukraine. At the end of May 2013, the World Federation of Women’s Organizations and the UNWLA re- ceived an invitation from the Human Rights, National Minorities , and International Relations Committee of the Ukrainian Parliament to participate in parliamentary hearin gs on the state of human rights in Ukraine. The invitation was signed by Valerij Patskan, Chair of the Committee and member of the UDAR party whom we had met during the CSW weeks in March of 2013. A joint statement of recommendations, signed by the WFUWO a nd the UNWLA, was formulated and submitted by e - mail to the Committee. On March 13, 2014, during the 58th session of the CSW, WFUWO representatives had the oppor- tunity to be present for the Ukrainian Prime Minister’s statement to the UN Security Council. This ap- pearance happened to coincide with the annual CSW session. On the following day, WFUWO delegates
