Our attention was drawn to a doctor who had been helping children from Ukraine for many years, a physician from Shriners Hospital in Boston, MA. It soon be came known to us that one of Dr. Gennadiy Fuzaylov’s (the proposed partner) patients was Nastya Ovchar, a young burn victim from Kharkiv, Ukraine, for whose care the UNWLA had initiated a fund at the time of her accident back in October of 2005. By Septemb er 2011, our relation- ship and discussions with Dr. Fu- zaylov culminated in our support of the very first Shriner s Outreach Clinic in Eastern E urope, held in L’viv, Ukraine. During the plan- ning stages of this Clinic, which would be repeated in September 2012 and 2013, the UNWLA also formed a relationship with the Chief of the P ediatric Burn Unit of Hospital No. 8 in L’viv, Dr . Vasyl Savc hyn. Hospital No. 8 would be the host hospital for this important step in the improvement of the level of burn care in the L ’viv area. After consulti ng with an attorney and our CPA , it was decided that this project would indeed be in the spirit of Mary Beck, Honorary UNWLA member and an outstanding woman who upon her passing had left a significant legacy to the UN- WLA. Our partn ership to help young burn victims would be funded thanks to the very generous spirit of Mary Beck. Annually Dr . Fu- zaylov and a team of doctors ( including Dr . D aniel Driscoll as surgeon as well as supporting nurses ) travel to L’viv, assess children with burns who come from all over Ukraine, operate with Dr. Savchyn, plan fol- low - up care, and finally recommend which of these patients shou ld be brought to Shriners for further, more complex but free Meeting w ith Dr. V. Savchyn from the Pediatric Burn Unit, Hospital #8 .
