64 ХХ Х Конвенція СУА Si multaneously, an intense letter - writ ing and telephone campaign ensued , coupled with demon- strations t hroughout the country. The goal was to inform our government of the situation and to encour- age its suppo rt. Our democratic system worked: our politicians listened and actions were taken to put pressure on Russia. A democratic system works — and that is the goal towards which we are all working: full - fledged democracy in Ukraine. Women’s Studies Lectureship at the Ukrainian Catholic University in L’viv, Ukraine The second resolution pertaining to cultural affairs accepted at the XXIX UNWLA Convention states, “[s]tudy the feasibility of funding a Lectureship in Women’s/Gender Studies at the Ukrainian Catholic University in L’viv,” which is the only independent uni versity in modern Ukraine (resolutions can be found on page 21 in the July - August 2011 issue of Our Life ). After the Convention, the Executive Committee did further research, spoke in depth with experts in the field, and had extensive communica- tion with UCU representatives to ensure that the UNWLA `s goals could be reached within UCU’s exist- ing framework. At the National Board annual meeting held in October of 2011, a panel of independent experts offered its firm views from different perspectives on the n ecessity and timeliness of such a pro- gram. A vote was taken and the creation of an endowment was overwhelmingly passed by the National Board. The UNWLA would be instrumental in a groundbreaking program in women’s studies under scor- ing its be lief that education is the key to a modern and viable Ukraine, to the young women of Ukraine developing a more positive self - image and finding their place in contemporary Ukraine. This would be accomplished through the creation of a $100,000 endowment to b e deposited at the Ukrainian Catholic Education Foundation in Chicago; the Foundation would disburse these funds to cover the semester costs at UCU. In November of 2011, at a meeting with Pa- triarch Svyatoslav of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and Fr. Rector Boris Gudziak, the President of the UNWLA gave the first $25,000 contribution. Meeting with His Beatitude Patriarch Svyatoslav at Fordham University 11/20/2011 . Press releases were written in various diaspora newspapers and an intensive fundraising campaign and information dissemination began. Bishop Boris Gudziak’s (then Rector of UCU) strong endorsement encouraged the process. In January and February of 2012, conference calls were held with the Presidents of the Regional Councils, the Liaison to Branches - at - Large and the Chairwoman of the Members - at - Large to discuss the awareness campaign and fundraising plans presented. These conference calls were held throughout the entire process. Meanwhile, I kept our membership and interested parti es informed of de- tails through my monthly Our Life column, and members were encouraged to contact either myself or Sofia Hewryk, UNWLA V ice P resident for Cultural Affairs, with any questions. After months of c ooperation with the rector and d eans of UCU, an official “position” document clearly spelling out the guidelines of the lectureship was agreed to and the agreement was signed by the UNWLA and UCEF. On September 1, 2012 , the official inauguration was held in L’viv.
