ХХ Х Конвенція СУА 35 Warm greetings to the Delegates and Guests of the XXX Convention of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America! THE FUTURE OF THE UNWLA IS IN OUR HANDS! This Convention, the first convention in thirty years to be held in the New York City ar- ea, the very place where our organization was born, gives us much to be proud of, to reflect on , but it is also a time to look forward. This important gathering will afford us a platform for evalu- ation and discussion. As we come together over these several da ys, let us be proud of our accom- plishments but at the same time keep the convention slogan in mind: The future of the UNWLA is in our hands — our future is indeed the responsibility of each and every one of us. As the UNWLA approaches its 90th anniversary in 2015, we can boast that we are mem- bers of a highly - respected organization, one founded on ideals which are backed up with concrete and positive actions; UNWLA is an organization which connects both generations and immigra- tions. We are fortunate that toge ther we have such a wealth of wisdom, experience, and knowledge. Over the past three years, we have seen our B ranches - at - L arge and our M embers - at - L arge numbers grow. This is a fairly new phenomenon and we should ensure that this increasing pool of talente d membership is nurtured. We have witnessed the growth of some of our Regional Councils, while others are facing challenges. This is an area where evaluation and discussion is essential. The future of the UNWLA is in our hands. It has been more than twent y years since Ukraine became independent — we rejoiced then, renewed the UNWLA’s partnership with the Ukrainian Women’s League of Ukraine, and continued developing our projects in Ukraine. However, history repeats itself and Ukraine once again finds itself i n turbulent times. The role of our organization has always been defined by cur- rent needs and, once again, it has been so in the final months of 2013 and has carried through to today. Besides the immediate response to the Maidan and its aftermath, we have e xamined and will continue to reflect on the future path of our work and our projects in Ukraine while steadfast- ly supporting all facets of human rights. Past experience will guide us into the future. I have had the honor to represent the UNWLA at Regional Council meetings, community events, conferences on many occasions, but also at meetings with U.S. government representa- tives on behalf of Ukraine’s interests. We have continued all UNWLA activities within the guidelines of the UNWLA by - laws and most recen t resolutions (XXIX Convention) while at the same time attempting to modernize internal operations. I thank our Executive Committee, our National Board, each Regional Council, each Branch and every member for their efforts and contributions towards our joi nt successes and important achievements over the past three years. I am confident that together we have the will and the ca- pacity to achieve new and exciting goals which will complement the legacy of our predecessors. I am confident that the “future which is in our hands” will be a bright one!
