32 ХХ Х Конвенція СУА My Dear Soyuzianky – Delegates and Participants at the XXX UNWLA Convention, Please accept my sincere greetings and my gratitude for all the work that you have done in supporting UNWLA causes. Above all, I want to express my appreciation to each and every one of you for belonging to the UNWLA. Our organization is the largest and the only independ- ent Ukrainian women’s organization in the United States of America. Since 1925, we have oper- ated democratically and independently, pursuant to the laws of the United States of Ame rica and in accordance with the UNWLA Constitution and Bylaws. During the era of the Iron Curtain, it is we who were “the face and the voice” of Ukrainian women in the free world. It is we who served as the representatives of Soyuz Ukrainok of Ukraine, w hose activities had been banned and deemed “illegal” by a hostile Soviet government. It was with great joy that we received the news of the dissolution of the USSR in 1991, the year the Ukrainian people voted at a referendum to restore the sovereignty of our ancestral homeland. Soon after, we joyfully watched the rebirth of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of Ukraine – Soyuz Ukrainok of Ukraine. Today, with Ukraine still in our hearts, we continue all our programs and activities, care- fully adhering to the laws, particularly to the IRS Code Section 501(c)3, which apply to our sta- tus as a non - profit tax - exempt organization. Another longstanding tradition that we continue to uphold is the publishing of Our Life magazine. The first issue of Our Life was re leased on January 1, 1944. Our Life has been and still is an incessant voice from us and about us. Since 1925, UNWLA social welfare programs were always close to the maternal in- stincts of our membership. They centered on providing assistance to the needy (especially chil- dren) and to victims of man - made or natural disasters. A centralized UNWLA Scholarship/Children - Student Sponsorship Program was estab- lished in 1967 and is in its 47th year of continuous activity. It is a well - coordinated program that pro vides financial assistance to a wide range of students (1st grade to Ph.D. programs) in Ukraine, Ukrainian Diaspora, and the USA. Thanks to the generosity of sponsors, we saw hun- dreds of “their” students become professionals. Founded by the UNWLA in 1976, the Ukrainian Museum in New York is a treasure chest of Ukrainian cultural tradition, an inheritance that must be protected, supported and pre- served for the future generations. The UNWLA’s most recent educational initiative was the establishment of the UNWLA Women’s Studies Lectureship at the Ukrainian Catholic University in L’viv, adopted in 2011. From the bottom of my heart I wish all of you successful deliberations as you look to- ward the future and elect UNWLA leaders who will serve the organization o ver the next three years. To the outgoing UNWLA National Board, led by President Marianna Zajac, I offer my congratulations and my gratitude for their dedicated, voluntary leadership during the past three years. Yesterday is the past that must not be for gotten. Today is the present that is preparing us for the distant future that we cannot foresee. We must be ready to go forward and be attuned to the changes that time brings. Our legacy has always comprised a focus on Ukraine’s needs. We must address the current needs with the compassion and support that has always been the es- sence and spirit of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America. God Bless! Anna Krawczuk, UNWLA Honorary President
