ХХ Х Конвенція СУА 261 UNWLA BRANCH 124, ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA BRANCH - AT - LARGE The UNWLA Branch 124 of St. Petersburg, Florida, has been in existence for fourteen years. It began with an enthusiastic woman, Mrs. Mira Hankewych, energetically talking about the work which the UNWLA does and then organizing a small group of women. In 1990, with Mrs. Maria Nawarynsky as our godmother , we officially became UNWLA Branch 124 of St. Petersburg, Florida. The first pr esident and vice president were Mrs. Luba Mycyk and Mrs. Larysa Holowatyj, who served for nine years each. Years passed, and a new board was elected with Olya N. Czerkas as President, Bohdanna Kulba as Vice President, Irene Popovich as Treasurer and Membe rship Chair, Karyn Klos as Secretary, Marian Serna as Corresponding Secretary and Social Welfare Chair, Eva Reinhardt leading Hospitality, Maria Pichun in charge of Scholarship, Maria Brown as Archivist, and Vera Swade as Publications Chair. Over the ye ars, life brought changes to our community. There were happy times such as births, marriages, and new families moving into the area, and there were also sad times when we said good - bye to friends who were moving. Unfortunately, within the last four years, we have said our last farewell to a few very active branch members who have gone to their eternal rest: Mrs. Zenovia Bundziak, Mrs. Stefania Kobylecky, Mrs. Irena Kuc, Mrs. Vera Pestyk, Mrs. Luba Cichowlas, and Mrs. Anna Kurylak. They are dearly missed. Ma y they rest in eternal peace! Branch 124 is not large in number, but our enthusiasm, creativity, and high energy level continue to amaze all. We focus on the elderly and the sick, on educating others about Ukraine, its culture, and heritage, and on spons oring events to unify our people. The women of our branch are often called “the heart of our community,” a name in which we take pride. Over the years, Mrs. Marian Serna has been a vital link between community members and Branch 124. She has volunteered to send greeting cards from the branch to individuals for all occasions. Cards are sent for a speedy recovery, a happy birthday, just saying “We are thinking of you,” and extending our deepest sympathy during the most difficult times. Marian always include s a personalized note letting the recipients know that we are thinking of them. The spring season brings the beginning of life in nature and a special spark of joy to our branch as we prepare the traditional Easter baskets for the elderly. We plan, meet, talk, laugh, and enjoy creating the traditional baskets. Once the Easter baskets are blessed, members make a special delivery and spend time with our elderly and those homebound. Not only are the ones receiving the baskets overjoyed by the visit, but the w omen delivering the traditional basket are touched by a sense of fulfillment. Our women have made a difference in our community. They have genuinely brought happiness to others. Over the years, Branch 124 has continued to prepare Easter baskets for the elderly and homebound. Continuing with the spring theme and the Easter season, Mrs. Eva Reinhardt taught our women the art of wreath - making. Using pysanky and an assortment of silk flowers, our members created gor- geous wreaths that beautifully adorn many homes. We enjoyed learning this new craft and also
