Highlights for 2011 In January of 2011, Branch 118 of Houston, Texas, conducted a meeting and elected the following B ranch officers: Martha Noukas, P res- i dent; Iryna Petrovska, Vice President; Halya Seniw, Treasurer; and Pam Uschak, S ecretary. In March, Branch 118 celebrated International Women’s Day at the ZaZa Hotel. A group of eight women gathered in the restaurant area for appetizers, drinks, and socializing. The hotel manager brought a complimentary bottle of champagne to our table to help us celebrate! A three - year report was submitted to the 29th UNWLA Convention Book by Branch President Martha Noukas. In May of 2011, Olga Dub traveled to New Je rsey to represent Branch 118 at the UNWLA Con- vention and returned with a renewed spirit and enthusiasm for our organization. Branch 118 awarded Social Welfare funds to several individuals. Olha Trypachuk in L’viv re- ceived a donation for medical needs; Olga Dub delivered the money. Branch 118 also awarded $500 to Vasyl Chependyuk in Chernivtsi, for medicine (insulin) as he is suffering with diabetes. The money was given to his sister, Svitlana Krutikov, and she forwarded the money to him. In celebration of h er new step in life, Branch 118 gave a monetary wedding gift to member Hannah Uschak. In the spring, Martha Noukas, Justyna Uschak, and Pam Uschak visited a former UNWLA member, Irene Pawlowski, whose husband had a stroke and has been in a wheelchair since then. A gift of $500 was given to Irene’s hus- band, George Pawlowski, to help pay for his medical expenses. In addition, Branch 118 supported the UNWLA Scholarship Program and mailed $330 to student Evhen Osadchy and $330 to student Mariana Novicova. We al so awarded $100 to Kateryna Bidula (exchange student) who assisted in teaching the younger children of Ridna Shkola while she was in Houston. Branch 118 co - sponsored two events in the spring. The first was an annual fundraiser, the Ukrain- ian Easter Bazaar, with Pokrova Ukrainian Catholic Church. This co - sponsorship was done to help Pokrova earn some desperately needed funds to replace the copper stolen from their air conditioning units and for repairs to the parish hall. The bazaar included a pysanky demonstration class, a performance by the Zhuravli Ukrainian Dancers, and a fantastic raffle. The food and baked goods were all delicious, and the bazaar was a success. Branch 118 also assisted the Ukrainian American Cultural Club of Houston with pysanky supplies for their pysanky class. Some of our members attended the workshop. In August, our Ukrainian Independence Day celebration was a joint effort of the Ukrainian Amer- ican Cultural Club, UNWLA Branch 118, and the Pokrova Ukrainian Catholic Church. The celebration was held in the Pokrova Parish Hall and included singing, dancing, and a skit set to music. In September, UNWLA Branch 118 participated in the Sts. Cyril and Methodius Slavic Heritage Festival by placing an ad in the brochure and by having a b ooth where we sold crafts and supplies. In De- cember, Branch 118 participated in the Pokrova Ukrainian Christmas Bazaar by selling crafts and inven- tory supplies. Additionally, in late December, Branch 118 held a Christmas party for its members at the home o f Bogdan and Halyna Seniw. At that party, we held a short meeting in which several monetary requests were made. As a result of those donations , Branch 118 awarded $500 to assist a girl in Ukraine
