244 ХХ Х Конвенція СУА During the year we conducted our annual fundraisers: a Christmas party at the home of member Halyna Jakubowycz and gift - wrapping at a local Barnes & Noble bookstore. We also enjoyed a summer picnic at the home of Treasurer, M. Orysia Jacus. In 2012 the branch embarked on two initiatives: one was a drive for more members and the other was fundraising for the UNWLA Scholarship/Children - Student Sponsorship Program. Both efforts were successful. Three new members were added to our roster: a mother and daughter, Mrs. Helen Pawlenko and Ms. Natalie Pawlenko, and Anne Miele. The Secretary, Irene Krawczuk, penned articles about our search for new members that were published in America, The Ukrainian W eekly, and Our Life. Maria Polanskyj, our member who is the National Chair for the UNWLA Scholarship/Children - Student Sponsorship Program, alerted the branch to the need for fundraising for the program. Stipend amounts increased, as did the number of applicants. In response, Branch 98 volunteer members (see the UNWLA Scholarship Committee members and volunteers: l - r: Nadia Jaworiw, Victoria M ischenko, Anna Krawczuk, Maria Polanskyj, Luba Bilowchtchuk, M. Orysia Jacus. __________________________ _ photo ) conducted a mass mailing seeking donations and/or sponsors. Two members, Elizabeth Barna and Maria Ilczenko, agreed to sponsor a student in Brazil, and another member, Nadia Jaworiw, raised $1000, including a $500 donation from her mother, Paran ia Ja- woriw. Member Luba Bilowchtchuk (Branch 98 Scholarship Chair) hosted a jewelry party fundraiser in her home in April 2012. “Stella & Dot” representative Mimi Polanskyj conducted the event and donated the proceeds. Branch Secretary Irene Krawczuk wr ote a series of articles about the event, which were published in Our Life, America, and The Ukrainian Weekly. As a result of these efforts, approximately $14,656 was raised during 2012 through the volunteer efforts of our branch members. Of that amount, $10,460 (38 scholarships) was credited directly to Branch 98 members, family, and friends. On March 1, 2012, members Anna Krawczuk and Maria Polanskyj attended a conference orga- nized by the World Federation of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations at the UN in New York City. The panel’s topic was Rural Women: Realities and Initiatives toward Empowerment. Both members were also in the UNWLA delegation to the 10th World Congress of Ukrainian Women’s Organizations held in To- ronto, Canada, on October 10 - 15, 2012. Acknowledged during the year was the passing of Atena Pashko, the first President of Soyuz Ukrayinok of Ukraine since Ukraine’s independence in 1991. UNWLA Honorary President Anna Kraw- czuk wrote an article in Ukrainian and English for Our Life that honored Mrs. Pashko’s life and work, as well as the mutual understanding and cooperation that developed between Soyuz Ukrayinok of Ukraine and the UNWLA during her tenure. 2012 also saw our branch’s traditional fundraising events: a picnic in June at the home of M. Ory- sia Jacus, a Christmas party at the home of Halyna Jakubowycz, and gift - wrapping at Barnes & Noble. Branch 98 began 2013 with its annual meeting on January 23, 2013, that included elections of its officers for 2013 - 2015. Reelected were Victoria Misch enko, President, Elizabeth Barna, Vice - President, M. Orysia Jacus, Treasurer, and Irene Krawczuk, Secretary. Nadia Jawo riw was elected Chair of the Scholarship Committee, Luba Bilow chtchuk Chair of Social Welfare, and Maria Ilczenko, Maria Polan- skyj, and Halyna Jakubowycz to the Auditing Committee.
