240 ХХ Х Конвенція СУА serves as an anchor for our branch and all of our other community organizations, as it is the only physical space where we can come together as a community. We tak e pride in helping the local community. In the past, we have helped a local school with needed food supplies for hungry children. Last year we helped one of our own by raising funds and providing money, food, and clothing to a needy family of recent immigr ants. The mother of the family stated many times that she never knew that such people existed in America. We routinely reach out to the American public and are involved with the Duchess County Arts Council that promotes local ethnic groups and their respec tive traditional cultures. One such event was the Beacon Day in the fall of 2013, during which we displayed Trypillian - style art and gave historical infor- mation about Trypillia. In 2012, we displayed traditional Ukrainian gerdany . Also in 2012, in cooperat ion with the Duchess County Arts Council, we displayed traditional babky and wedding korovai at the Adri- ance Library in Poughkeepsie, NY, as part of their program “Our Daily Bread.” In 2011, the Duchess County Arts Council sponsored our “Ukrainian Children ’s Day” event at the Ellenville Library in Ellen- ville, NY. Annually, we pin flowers on the women of our local parish on Mother's Day, a tradition started by our predecessors from Branch 89. We do the same for Father's Day, and also provide coffee, tea, an d sweets gratis. We have been thanked by the community for carrying on the tradition as many of the older ladies say that they wondered if someone would remember to make flowers for them. We participate in the church's Easter and Christmas bazaars, which a re open to the general public. As we have many artistically gifted members, we also participate in outside craft bazaars, raising money for our branch. During the Christmas bazaar, we raised money for the Euromaidan. In the fall of 2013, we participated in a local SUM branch's 15th anniversary celebration, offering congratulations and support. This year, as in other years, we have sponsored a college student in Ukraine. We donated $2,500 from our branch to the Ukrainian Catholic University in L’viv, Ukraine , to help fund the UNWLA Lectureship in Women’s Studies. Our annual election of branch officers was held on Janu- ary 26th, 2014. In January 2014, our members caroled at the local Self - Reliance Credit Union, alongside our dance group, SUM and PLAST branches, as well as the Ukrainian Heritage School. Each organization received a generous donation from the Credit Union. The past two months have brought a flurry of activity with the recent events in Ukraine. Many members participated in our local Euromaidan rall y on February 2nd. This rally was featured in a local newspaper and this was the third time in the past two months that our Ukrainian community was in the local paper, presenting information on the Euromaidan. In early December, our pastor and a member of our parish who personally helped the Euromaidan organizers in Kyiv in their daily work were featured in local newspaper articles. Our branch members, community leaders, and UNWLA President Marianna Zajac met with our local Congressman to ask him to support Ukrainian Euromaidan. He immediately pledged support and asked to be listed as a co - sponsor of a bill in support of Ukraine. We have high hopes for our brethren in Ukraine. Slava Ukraini! Eva Panchyshyn Former President of UNWLA Branch 95
