ХХ Х Конвенція СУА 231 brought to light the plight of orphaned children in Ukraine. Their desperate condition deeply moved our members and inspired us to move forward with collections and shipments of needed items to several or- phan ages in Ukraine in 2012 and again in 2013. These efforts are just a few examples of how our branch supports UNWLA social welfare and charitable projects. Spearheaded by our Social Welfare Chairs, Ula- na Markiv and Larysa Domino, and with donations obtained by Dr. Daria Wang and others, we also sent goodwill packages to orphanages in Chernivtsi, several boxes of pajamas and warm clothing to the Senior Center in L’viv, and hospital linens and supplies to a pediatric hospital in Sambir. Branch 85 devotes much time and effort in supporting the UNWLA Scholarship Program. In fur- therance of this goal, members sold beautifully decorated boxes of home - baked cookies at the St. Nicho- las Ukrainian Village Market. All profits were used for philanthropic purposes, with t he majority portion going towards funding scholarships for four deserving students in Ukraine. Additional funds were col- lected in the spring of 2013 at St. Joseph’s Church during a scholarship drive organized by our Scholar- ship Committee Chair, Natalka Myc yk. For the past fifteen years our branch has participated in the annual Christmas Around the World event at Chicago’s prestigious Museum of Science and Industry. In early November, members and several helpful ladder - climbing spouses decorate the Ukraini an tree with hundreds of hand - crafted, Ukrainian - themed ornaments. The tree is prominently displayed with others in the Museum rotunda throughout the holiday season. Each December, Committee Chair Christine Dziuk organizes a Ukrainian Day program featuri ng various local dance groups and choirs. In 2012 and 2013, visitors enjoyed performances by Che- rubic Voices Children’s Choir and Iskra School of Ukrainian Dance. The program is always well attended by museum visitors who are treated to a concert of Ukrain ian carols and traditional folk dancing while learning about Ukrainian Christmas traditions. Social events such as ladies nights and yoga classes are also an important aspect of our branch activities. Our annual Christmas get - together was held in December 2012 at the home of Co - President Tania Janos. This evening provided members and their spouses with an opportunity to socialize and get to know one another in a relaxed, festive atmosphere. In April of 2013, Branch 85 spent an enjoyable evening at the hom e of Roxana Charkewycz where, while snacking on gourmet popcorn, we viewed the film The Whistleblower, directed and co - written by Larysa Kondracki. The film, adapted from an exposé written by Kathryn Bolkovac, tells the true story of the United Nations’ s ex - trafficking scandal which Bolkovac uncovered while working in Bosnia. Although the hour was late, members stayed for several more hours discussing the disturbing issue of human trafficking and sexual exploitation. Another highlight of the past two year s was the first of what we hope will be many Branch 85 book club meetings. For our first book, we chose The Silence of Trees, a powerful, beautifully written Ukrainian immigrant story, which combines strong characters with folklore and traditions. We were for- tunate to have the author, Valya Dudycz Lupescu, present at the meeting. Her interesting insights and an- swers to our many questions greatly enhanced the evening. During our next meeting, branch members discussed Luba Komar’s Scratches on a Prison Wall . Lastly, we invited author Dr. Daniel Hryhorczuk to preview his debut novel Caught in the Current, our next book selection, at our quarterly meeting in the fall. Branch 85 members actively and enthusiastically support UNWLA Chicago Region activities suc h as Den’ Soyuzianky , the letter - writing campaign in support of EuroMaidan, events organized by oth- er branches, as well as local Ukrainian community events. In addition, several of our members hold im- portant leadership positions in the Chicago Regional Cou ncil. Members of Branch 85 look forward to many more events this year leading up to the XXX Con- vention. Our Co - Presidents have been successful in galvanizing and uniting members around our com- mon, shared UNWLA goals. Communication between members and the sharing of ideas has been in- creased by frequent emails, surveys, and updates, and with the opening of our own Facebook page. By providing a great variety of activities in the future, we hope to have “something for everyone.” Christine Dziuk, Press Secretary
