ХХ Х Конвенція СУА 19 Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA Office of Metropolitan Antony South Bound Brook, NJ 23 May 2014 UKRAINIAN NATIONAL WOMEN’S LEAGUE OF AMERICA Marianna Zajac, President, Executive Committee and all UNWL A Members and Friends XXX Convention Participants – Tarryt own, NY Dearly Beloved Ukrainian Women! GLORY TO OUR LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST! I greet the President Marianna Zajac, Executive Officers and the entire membership of the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America gathered in Tarrytown, NY , for the organization’s XXX Convention in the name of His Grace Bishop Daniel and all the clergy and faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA! I am so pleased to be able to write to you once again, in particular , during the historical events now taking pl ace in our native Ukraine. Bishop Dani e l (who is presently in Ukraine delivering assistance to the injured and the families of those who died on the Maidan) and I ask you all to pray fervently that all the rapidly developing events come to a positive conclusion and that all the leaders involved in any aspect of Ukrainian government, Church , and society will strive ONLY for the good of Ukraine without seeking personal advantage or increased authority for the mselves or their organizations. This is the mo st important statement and request that I will make in this greeting to you as leaders of the Ukrainian community here in the United States of America. I say “leaders of the Ukrainian community” because that is precisely what you are. You have followed in the long tradition of not only our Ukrainian nation, but also of the Holy Church and all other aspects of our com- munity’s life. St. Ol’ha must surely be recalled as primary among all the heads of government throughout the histo- ry of not only Ukraine, but all of Europe as well — in particular her role as “Equal to the Apostles and Baptizer of Ukraine” along with her grandson, St. Volodymyr, who bears the same title in ecclesiastical history. You have emu- lated the strong Ukrainian women who were taken as bride s by the powerful ruling monarchs of Europe and Scan- dinavia. Through the UNWLA you have followed the tradition of St. Ol’ha, especially during the difficult years of communist repression and genocide, in preserving the treasured legacy of Ukrainian culture and history in many, many ways. I mention just the Ukrainian Museum in New York City as a primary example of that preservation as a historical fact and all that lead up to the most recent effort along with the Ukrainian Mission to the United Nations to c ommemorate the life work of the “Bard of Ukraine,” Taras Shevchenko. It would be very difficult to even begin to enumerate all the other accomplishments before or between these two mentioned! Take the time to read the Holy Epistles of Holy Apostle Paul wh ere he mentions the powerful accom- plishments and leadership of women in assi sting his ministry and beyond — like Phoebe, the only woman com- missioned by St. Paul to ministry, Prisca (Priscilla ) , Mary, Junia, Julia, Tryphena, Tryphosa, Chloe, Euodia , and Synty che , all acting during the time when women were really considered to be the property of men. Paul identi- fied them as “outstanding among the apostles” or “co - workers in the Gospel”! I a m not going to provid e the Epistle references here — I want you to lo ok these women up yourselves. We, of course, cannot forget the power- ful presence of women during th e ministry of Christ our Lord — the Mother of God, Mary Magdale ne, Mary the mother of James, Johanna, Susanna , and many others identified in the Gospels and the B ook of Acts. You have a tradition of extremely powerful and dedicated women to emulate in your contin ued work as the organization — the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America — and as individuals in your own local communities and your families. I greet you and I thank you for your ongoing dedication and continued valuable work. May our Lord bless you abundantly with the strength necessary to overcome the secularization of our American society and the will to draw your daughters and granddaughters into a co mmitment to continue your work. You are in my pray- ers as you gather in convention and in the massive amount of work that still remains for you.
