206 ХХ Х Конвенція СУА UNWLA BRANCH 50, ANN ARBOR, MI DETROIT REGIONAL COUNCIL Branch 50 currently has 20 members, most of whom live in Ann Arbor, Michigan. We are proud to have had four new members recently join the group: Svitlana Rogovyk, Olya Lash, Jessica Zychowycz, and Halia Pytiak. We said farewell to Zenia Brovinsky, a foundi ng member, who passed away at the age of 90. Every year we hold eight branch meetings and twice as many work meetings of the board. At monthly skhodyny , we listen to visiting scholars, faculty, or students from the University of Michigan (UM) invited by o ur Program Chair, Oksana Malanchuk. In 2011 - 12, Branch 50 members themselves researched and delivered 13 biography presentations on distinguished Ukrainian women to the other members. The material was then used in the Notable Ukrainian Women Calendar 2013 , which was created and compiled by Oksana Malanchuk and Oksana Posa and designed by Ruta Shamraj and Barbara Carson. This project was our first fundraiser for the Ukrainian Studies program at UM. We raised $2,500. In 2013, we undertook a second similar pr oject, Poetry of Ukraine Calendar 2014, and raised al- most $3,000 for the same cause. UM Professor Emeritus Assya Humesky was the principal editor of the poems which appeared in Ukrainian and English, and Ruta Shamraj assisted a nd designed the calendar . Fin ally, our most significant event was the visit of former President of Ukraine, Viktor Yush- chenko, and his wife Kateryna to Ann Arbor in October of 2013. Facilitated by our member Svitlana Rogovyk, the visit was sponsored by the Ronald Weiser Center for Eme rging Democracies at UM. Viktor Yushchenko delivered the keynote address, “Shades of Orange,” at the Weiser Center’s 5th anniversary celebration. Many events took place on campus in conjunction with the visit. Out of four exhibits, our members were instrum ental in two: Ukrainian Women’s Handiwork and Orange Revolution Memorabilia which Barbara Carson and Ruta Shamraj collected and organized ; we helped with a third one: Wooden Churches of Ukraine which featured linoprints by Bohdan Soroka. Branch 50 also or ganized and sponsored a luncheon with the President and First Lady at the Ukrainian - owned TeaHaus where poetry and music reigned. In the warm atmosphere, accompanied with delicious food, another $3,500 was collected to kick - off a new round of fundraising f or the Ukrainian Studies Endowment at UM. Oksana Malanchuk managed all of the communications and helped with re- ceptions for the public. Ulana Kushner wrote a thoughtful report for the Detroit News , a monthly Ukraini- an publication.
