200 ХХ Х Конвенція СУА UNWLA BRANCH 34, COHOES, NEW YORK CENTRAL NEW YORK REGION 1st row (l - r): Irena Halibej, Halyna Holo - vetsky, Oksana Ciupka, Daria Kendersky, Ma- ria Maciuk, and Ulana Omecin - sky; 2nd row (l - r): Karina Barsigian, Yaro- slava Lewyckyj - Perry, Nina Lewyckyj, Hal- yna Logan, Christine Kyfor, and Halya Hebert. Branch 34 was established in 1930 and is currently comprised of 23 members. We are mothers and daughters who are p rofessionals and who remain active in both local Ukrainian and American com- munities. For over 80 years our branch has continued furthering Ukrainian traditions by sponsoring Christ- mas Yalynka , Easter Sviachene , and Mother's and Father's Day celebrations to which we invite our Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church parishioners and community. All of our events were carried out under the leadership of Maria Maciuk, President of our branch for fourteen years from 1998 to 2012. We are grateful for her continued inspiration and support of our activities. We welcomed five new members since 2011. U nfortunately, three of our long time members passed way: Olga Rakoczy, Olha Pawliw, and Sofia Popowski. May their memory live on! Four of our members teach at ou r local Ukrainian school. They were very active in planning the Holodomor commemorative event in Albany, NY, in November 2013. They are also committee members who have been diligently working with New York State Senators and Assemblymen in sponsoring a bil l to include the Holodomor in the New York State high school curriculum. We commemorat ed the 100th Anniversary of Lesy a Ukrainka’s death with a Parastas service after mass and an educational presentation about this great Ukrainian woman. The display ab out Les y a Ukrainka was then donated to our local Ukrainian school. March 2014 marks the 200th Anniversary of Taras Shevchenko’s birth; annually a Shevchenko program is presented by the Ukrainian school students for our Ukrainian community in which our bran ch members wholeheartedly participate. Our monthly meetings are held Sundays after mass in the church hall of Sts. Peter and Paul. Funds are raised by varenyky sales, baked goods, coffee sales, donations, and various fundraising events. Obligations to the UNWLA are met yearly and all members subscribe to Our Life. In addition, this branch is a member of the Ukrainian Museum in New York City. Donations are regularly collected for humanitarian aid to Ukraine during troubled times, and a student in Ukraine is sponsored yearly. Our members visit the grave of the founding member of Branch 34, Olena Lototska, each year to offer prayers and place flowers on her grave. In addition, current members send holiday greetings, bring flowers, and pay visits to elderly bran ch members and parishioners. Our members actively participate in local as well as regional UNWLA meetings. We look for- ward to participating for many years to come for the good of the UNWLA and the Ukrainian nation. Oksana Ciupka, President Branch 34 wis hes the UNWLA a successful XXX Convention! Mnohaya Lita!
